Cu2Te is commonly used as the backside contact of CdTe-based solar cells. We predict a stable topological semimetal structure of Cu2Te(R3m) with triply degenerate nodal points near the Fermi energy. Triply degenerate nodal points are formed by the band crossing between two states with angular momentum j equal to 3/2 and 1/2 along the unique C3 axis. The anisotropic strain breaking C3 symmetry opens the energy gap, and transforms semimetal Cu2Te(R3m) into a topological insulator. It provides strong evidence for understanding the unconventional large linear magnetoresistance in Cu2-xTe. The band crossing of Cu2Te(R3m) strongly depends on the orbital on-site energy difference and the SOC strength. Crystal structures with the space group R3m (no. 160) are a good platform to obtain topological semimetals with triply degenerate nodal points. Compounds X2Y (X = Cu, Ag, Au, Y = O, S, Se, Te) except for Au2S and Cu2O are topological semimetals with triply degenerate nodal points around the Fermi energy.Molecular dynamics simulations combined with periodic electronic structure calculations are performed to decipher structural, thermodynamical and dynamical properties of the interfaced vs. confined water adsorbed in hexagonal 1D channels of the 2D layered electrically conductive Cu3(HHTP)2 and Cu3(HTTP)2 metal-organic frameworks (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and HTTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexathiotriphenylene). Comparing water adsorption in bulk vs. slab models of the studied 2D MOFs shows that water is preferentially adsorbed on the framework walls via forming hydrogen bonds to the organic linkers rather than by coordinating to the coordinatively unsaturated open-Cu2+ sites. Theory predicts that in Cu3(HTTP)2 the van der Waals interactions are stronger which helps the MOF maintain its layered morphology with allowing very little water molecules to diffuse into the interlayer space. Data presented in this work are general and helpful in implementing new strategies for preserving the integrity as well as electrical conductivity of porous materials in aqueous solutions.An overview of the latest developments in the metal-free synthesis of non-benzo-fused N-functionalized and NH-1,2,3-triazoles is provided in this feature article. Synthetic studies that appeared from 2016 until August 2020 are organized according to a wide-ranging classification, comprising oxidative and eliminative azide-dipolarophile cycloadditions, diazo transfer reactions and N-tosylhydrazone-mediated syntheses. The newly developed methods constitute a significant contribution to the field of 1,2,3-triazole synthesis in terms of structural variation via either the exploration of novel reactions, or the exploitation of existing methodologies.Vibrational excitation has been established as an efficient way to control the chemical reaction outcome. Stretching vibration of polyatomic molecules is believed to be efficient to promote abstraction reactions since energy is placed directly into the breaking bond. In this work, we report on a counterexample showing that exciting the low-frequency umbrella bending mode of ammonia enhances its reaction with fluorine atoms much more than exciting the high-frequency symmetric or asymmetric stretching mode over a wide range of collision energy, validated using both quasiclassical trajectory simulations and full-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations under the centrifugal-sudden approximation. This interesting mode-specific reaction dynamic originates from the increased chance of capturing the fluorine atom by ammonia due to the enlarged attractive interaction between them and the enhancement of the direct stripping reaction mediated by two submerged barriers.In this work, a theoretical method, taking into account the anisotropy of the internal magnetic field (B[combining right harpoon above]int), is proposed to predict the rate of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), i.e., τQTM-1, for Kramers single-ion magnets (SIMs). Direct comparison to both experimental and previous theoretical results of three typical Kramers SIMs indicates the necessity of the inclusion of the anisotropy of B[combining right harpoon above]int for accurate description of QTM. The predictions of the method here are consistent with the theory proposed by Prokof'ev and Stamp (PS). For Kramers SIMs of high magnetic axiality, the QTM rates, predicted by the method here, are almost linearly proportional to the results by the PS method. The dependence of τQTM-1 on various parameters is analyzed for model systems. The averaged magnitude of B[combining right harpoon above]int (Bave) and principal g value of the axial direction (gZ) are the parameters on which τQTM-1 is linearly dependent. The ones on which τQTM-1 is quadratically dependent are gXY, i.e., the principal g value of the transversal direction, and xaniso characterizing the anisotropy of B[combining right harpoon above]int. Compared to Bave and gZ, gXY and xaniso provide a higher order of dependence for QTM. Therefore regulation of the SMM property via introduction of desired values of gXY and xaniso ought to be a strategy more efficient than the one via Bave and gZ. Being different from the one via gXY, the strategy via xaniso to regulate the QTM has been rarely touched upon according to our best knowledge. However, this strategy could also lead to significant improvement since it is the same as gXY in the aspect of the dependence of τQTM-1.Carbon nitride (CNx) is an emerging photocatalyst with the potential to efficiently produce solar fuels. CNx heterojunctions often show significant photocatalytic activity improvements. We review the charge carrier dynamics in a range of CNx heterojunctions including carbon-based material, black phosphorus, Ru complexes, molybdenum sulphide and metal phosphides. Time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) were the most common techniques employed for experimental charge carrier dynamics measurements. The low photoluminescence quantum yield of CNx appeared to limit the depth of conclusions from TRPL, with both lengthening and shortening of the TRPL lifetimes observed and attributed to enhanced charge separation. Overall, the charge carrier dynamics studies often showed a relative lifetime change of ∼2-fold and an activity improvement of &gt;10-fold. We highlight the need for the use of a wider range of techniques to monitor the charge carrier dynamics for conclusive determination of photophysics-activity relationships and elucidation of improvement mechanisms.B2CN was one of the synthesized light element compounds, which was expected to be superhard material with a metallic character due to its electron deficienct nature. However, in this work, we discovered two novel semiconducting superhard B2CN phases using particle swarm intelligence technique and first-principles calculations, which were reported to have three-dimensional and four coordinated covalent diamond-like structures. These two new phases were calculated to be dynamically stable at zero and high pressures, and can be deduced from the previously reported Pmma phase by pressure-induced structural phase transitions. More importantly, unlike the previously proposed metallic B2CN structures, these two new phases combine superhard (the calculated Vickers hardness reached ∼55 GPa) and semiconducting character. The semiconducting behavior of the newly predicted B2CN phases breaks the traditional view of the metallic character of the electron deficient diamond-like B-C-N ternary compounds. By a detail analyzation of the electron localization functions of these two new phases, three-center bonds were reported between some B, C and B atoms, which were suggested to be the primary mechanism that helps the compound overcome its electron-deficient nature and finally exhibit a semiconducting behavior.The effect of traces of ethanol in supercritical carbon dioxide on the mixture's thermodynamic properties is studied by molecular simulations and Taylor dispersion measurements. This mixture is investigated along the isobar p = 10 MPa in the temperature range between T = 304 and 343 K. Along this path, the mixture undergoes two transitions First, the Widom line is crossed, marking the transition from liquid-like to gas-like conditions. A second transition occurs from the supercritical gas-like domain to a subcritical gas. The Widom line crossover entails inflection points for most of the studied properties, i.e. density, enthalpy, shear viscosity, Maxwell-Stefan and intradiffusion coefficients. Dedicated atomistic simulations show the presence of microheterogeneities due to ethanol self-association along the investigated path, which lead to the mixture's anomalous behavior in its extended critical region.The hydrogen abstraction (HB) and addition reactions (HD) by H radicals are examined on a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monomers and models of quasi-surfaces using quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method. QCT results reproduce the rate constants of HB reactions on PAH monomers from density functional theory (DFT) in the range of 1500-2700 K. The PAH size has a minor impact on the rates of HB reactions, especially at temperatures beyond 2100 K. In contrast, HD reactions have a clear size dependence, and a larger PAH yields a higher rate. It was also found that the preferred reaction pathway changes from HB to HD reactions at ∼1900 K. The rates of surface HB and HD reactions exceed those in the gas phase by nearly one factor of magnitude. Further analysis of the detailed trajectory of the QCT method reveals that about 50% of surface reactions can be attributed to the events of surface diffusion, which depends on the local energy transfer in gas-surface interactions. However, this phenomenon is not preferred in PAH monomers, as expected. Our finding here questions the treatment of the surface reactions of soot as the product of the first collision between the gaseous species and particle surface. The surface diffusion-induced reactions should be accounted for in the rates of the surface HB and HD reactions. The rate constants of HB and HD reactions on each reactive site (surface zig-zag, surface free-edge and pocket free-edge sites) were calculated by QCT method, and are recommended for the further development of surface chemistry models in soot formation.Plasmon-induced hot carriers have recently attracted considerable interest, but the energy efficiency in visible light is often low due to the short lifetime of hot carriers and the limited optical absorption of plasmonic architectures. To increase the generation of hot carriers, we propose to exert multiple plasmonic resonant modes and their strong coupling using a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) nanocavity that comprises an Au nanohole array (AuNHA), a TiO2 thin film and an Au reflector. Unlike common MDM structures, in addition to the Fabry-Pérot mode in the dielectric layer, AuNHA as the top layer is special because it excites the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode in the Au nanoholes and launches the gap surface plasmon polariton (GSPP) mode in the Au reflector surface. The spatial field overlapping of the three resonance modes enables strong mode coupling by optimizing the TiO2 thickness, which leads to notably enhanced average IPCE (∼1.5%) and broadband photocurrent (170 μA·cm-2). This MDM structure would be useful for photochemistry and photovoltaics using sunlight.
