The statistics of an item are improved through upgrading it, which is also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment increases a stat linearly.

Most upgrade components slotted into items are not able to be replaced or salvaged without removing the gear in question, with the exception of legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a glyph or rune you don't want to use but it hasn't been incorporated to gear yet, you can move the item to a different piece by using the Upgrade Glyphs menu on the Glyphs Panel. This will create a Glyph Set that includes the chosen glyph.
You can remove a glyph by using a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. This will cause the item to be destroyed that it was installed in but you will be able to salvage the upgraded item using the glyph and its shards, so this should not be considered as a loss.
The addition of a glyph to an item may cause it to become unstable and the shards that are left of that glyph will disappear from your inventory once you take it down. You can also place an inscription on your equipment to give it a bonus. For instance the glyph Deferred Damage can store damage for the wearer and then deal it out slowly instead of all at once. Reroll tokens
Reroll tokens are used to change the affixes on weapons and equipment.
