The beneficial effects on the host's metabolism promoted by prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics have been successfully demonstrated by several studies. However, further investigation is needed to fully explain the cellular mechanisms of action of probiotics and prebiotics on human health, and also to elucidate the relationship between microbiota and obesity etiology, using well-designed, long-term, and large-scale clinical interventions.Introduction Postoperative delirium is a common sequela in older adults in the peri-operative period leading to poor outcomes with a complex pathophysiology which has led to a variety of different pharmacologic agents employed in attempts to prevent and treat this syndrome. No pharmacologic agent has been approved to treat this disorder, but this review discusses the pharmacologic strategies which have been tried based on the hypotheses of the causation of the syndrome including neurotransmitter imbalance, inflammation, and oxidative stress.Areas covered Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included via search of electronic databases specifically for the terms postoperative delirium and pharmacologic treatments. With this approach, the recurrent topics of analgesia and sedation, antipsychotics, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AchE-Is), inflammation, and melatonin were emphasized and provided the outline for this review.Expert opinion Research evidence does not support any particular agent in any of the pharmacologic classes reviewed. However, there is some potential benefit with dexmedetomidine, melatonin, and the monitoring of anesthetic agents all of which need further clinical trials to validate these conclusions. Exploration of ways to improve studies and the application of novel pharmacologic agents may offer future benefit.Emerging adults differ in terms of the extent to which they perceive themselves as adults. We examined how the ability to perform activities related to independent living (i.e., instrumental activities of daily living [IADLs]) was associated with perceived adulthood. Data were collected from 236 emerging adults in college. Results suggested that IADL scores were positively related to perceived adulthood and achieved criteria of adulthood even after controlling for race, year in school, age, and sex. Results are discussed in terms of the development and importance of IADLs during emerging adulthood.Recent pathogen incidents have forced food industry to seek for alternative processes in postharvest pasteurization of agricultural commodities. Radio frequency (RF) heating has been used as one alternative treatment to replace chemical fumigation and other conventional thermal methods since it is relatively easy to apply and leaves no chemical residues. RF technology transfers electromagnetic energy into large bulk volume of the products to provide a fast and volumetric heating. There are two types of RF technology commonly applied in lab and industry to generate the heat energy free running oscillator and 50-Ω systems. Several reviews have been published to introduce the application of RF heating in food processing. However, few reviews have a comprehensive summary of RF treatment for pasteurizing agricultural products. The objective of this review was to introduce the developments in the RF pasteurization of agricultural commodities and to present future directions of the RF heating applications. While the recent developments in the RF pasteurization were presented, thermal death kinetics of targeted pathogens as influenced by water activity, pathogen species and heating rates, non-thermal effects of RF heating, combining RF heating with other technologies for pasteurization, RF heating uniformity improvements using computer simulation and development of practical RF pasteurization processes were also focused. This review is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of RF pasteurization for agricultural products and promote the industrial-scale applications of RF technology with possible process protocol optimization purposes.OBJECTIVES Although the prevalence and mental health consequences of childhood maltreatment among adolescents have been studied widely, there are few data addressing these issues in Asian lower middle-income countries. Here, we assessed the prevalence and types of childhood maltreatment and, for the first time, examined their association with current mental health problems in Indian adolescents with a history of child work. METHODS One hundred and thirty-two adolescents (12-18 years; 114 males, 18 females) with a history of child work were interviewed using the Child Maltreatment, Conventional Crime, and Witnessing and Indirect Victimisation modules of the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire. Potential psychiatric diagnoses and current emotional and behavioural problems were assessed using the culturally adapted Hindi versions of the Youth's Inventory-4R and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, respectively. RESULTS A large proportion of the sample reported childhood abuse or neglect (83.36%), direcse effects on mental health and well-being, of child and adolescent workers. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) is a tool developed for quantifying the dietary inflammatory potential of individuals' diets, with the goal of assessing the effect of diet-associated inflammation on health outcomes. With most studies focusing on adults, little is known about the consequences for health of a more proinflammatory diet early in life. Hence, this study analyzed the available evidence on the association between the DII or the children's C-DII (C-DIITM) and cardiometabolic risk and inflammatory biomarkers in children and adolescents. Mevastatin cost This systematic review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search was performed at the LILACS, ScienceDirect, Cochrane and PubMed databases, without any restriction regarding the dates of the publications. A total of six observational studies qualified; including three cross-sectional and three longitudinal studies focused on children and adolescents between 3 and 18 years of age representing both sexes.
