It is reported that approximately 40 million people are suffering from dementia, globally. Dementia is a group of symptoms that affect neurons and cause some mental disorders, such as losing memory. RXD, SEM and FTIR were used to verify the transformation of TPS from native corn starch. TPS/BC is flexible and transparent, but it is less transparent that TPS and BC due to its multilayer format. TPS/BC presented similar thermal events to TPS and BC samples and thermal stability similar to TPS. The FTIR spectrum of the TPS/BC showed bands observed in the BC and TPS spectra. BC, TPS and TPS/BC showed faster water absorption in the initial stage reaching a stability at about 50 h and presenting Fickian behavior. TPS/BC showed lower water absorption and a good adhesion between the phases observed by SEM images, which can be associated to hydrogen interactions in the interface improving mechanical properties. TPS/BC showed an increase of about 3.6 times in the tensile strength compared to TPS, indicating that BC is a good reinforcement for TPS.Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. The maximum MPP adsorption capacities of BE (287.3 mg/g), BE/P.CH (634.5 mg/g), and BE/P.HEMA-MMA (868.5 mg/g) obtained after 300 min, 240 min, and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic properties of BE follow the Pseudo-second order behavior (R2 = 0.93) while BE/P.CH and BE/P.HEMA-MMA are of Pseudo-First order behavior (R2 > 0.92). Based on the equilibrium studies, the three products are of Freundlich isotherm behavior (R2 > 0.9) and the uptake is of multilayer forms on heterogeneous surfaces. The Gaussian energies (>8 KJ/mol), Gibbs free energies (>20 to 40 to less then 80 KJ/mol) give an indication about adsorption mechanism involved chemical and physical reactions. The thermodynamics of MPP uptake reactions by the three products are of endothermic and spontaneous behaviors. The MPP uptake in the presence of NH+4, PO4-3, Mn+2, and Pb+2 competitive ions reflects enhancement in the affinity of BE after the integration between it and the selected polymers.Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness worldwide. Several factors including post-translational modification, thermal and solar radiations promote cataractogenesis. The camel lens proteins survive very harsh desert conditions and resist cataractogenesis. The folding and aggregation mechanism of camel lens proteins are poorly characterized. The camel lens contains three ubiquitous crystallins (α-, β-, and γ-crystallin) and a novel protein (ζ-crystallin) in large amounts. In this study, a sequence similarity search of camel α-crystallin with that of other organisms showed that the camel αB-crystallin consists of an extended N-terminal domain. Our results indicate that camel α-crystallin efficiently prevented aggregation of ζ-crystallin, with or without an obligate cofactor up to 89 °C. It performed a quick and efficient holdase function irrespective of the unfolding stage or aggregation. Camel α-crystallin exhibits approximately 20% chaperone activity between 30 and 40 °C and is completely activated above 40 °C. Camel α-crystallin underwent a single reversible thermal transition without loss of β-sheet secondary structure. Intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence and ANS binding experiments revealed two transitions which corresponded to activation of its chaperone function. In contrast to earlier studies, camel α-crystallin completely protected lens proteins during thermal stress.
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women worldwide and the leading cause of cancer death in economically developing countries. We sought to study the contribution of BRCA1/2 mutations to the burden of breast cancer in Egypt.
103 Egyptian female breast cancer patients, unselected for age of onset or family history, were included in the study. Mutational screening of some exons of BRCA1/2 genes was performed using High Resolution Melting analysis followed by direct sequencing of detected variants.
Twenty sequence variants were identified. According to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and the Association for Molecular Pathology (ACMG/AMP) guidelines, 8 variants were classified as pathogenic (Class 5), 1 as likely pathogenic and 11 as variants of unknown significance (Class 3). The pathogenic variants comprised 5 novel frameshift mutations; BRCA1 c.5205delA and BRCA2 (c.3641delT, c.3291dupT, c.3292delA, and c.787dupA) mutations; 1 novel nonsense mutation (BRCA2 c.3280A>T) and 2 previously described missense mutations (BRCA1 c.117T>G, c.110C>A).
This study provides the results of our attempt to delineate the genetic aspect of breast cancer among the Egyptian population and emphasizes the necessity of implementing screening strategies for early diagnosis and counseling for breast cancer in Egypt.
