Also, they find difference in interest (topic-wise) between Twitter users and news outlets. This difference of focus gives some evidence to the agenda-setting behavior of the news industry, reinforcing the hypothesis of a profit-driven system, instead of an informative one. Our focus was their activities on social networks and Google-owned platforms, which are the primary sources of traffic and digital revenue for almost all outlets in our sample. As in previous months, the BBC reached more people than any other newsbrand in the UK.
Through its acquisition of Dotdash-Meredith, it also controls several online news and information providers such as People Magazine, The Balance, Entertainment Weekly, Better Homes & Gardens, Food + Wine, and Lifewire, among several others. Naspers is a multinational holding company with interests across several of the nation's newspapers, magazines, and book publishers, as well as a majority stake in the country's largest news media company, Media24. Naspers has also engaged in a number of international joint ventures, including in Holland and China including a 29% stake in the media giant Tencent. The “foreign agents” label, which can be slapped on media outlets as well as individual journalists, also drives away advertisers, as the very popular news website Meduza found in May. Media that refuse to use the label after being added to the list face heavy fines and the threat of closure, as seen with Radio Svoboda.
It was followed by Global’s speech radio station LBC (up 115% year-on-year to 5.5 million). LBC has recently stepped up its investment in on-air talent, hiring Natasha Clark from The Sun as political editor while Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel joined parent company Global last year from the BBC. Third fastest-growing was Global’s speech radio station LBC (up 87% year-on-year to 4.2 million). In the latest RAJAR results, published on Thursday, LBC also grew its radio listenership slightly in the third quarter of the year, with London listenership up 2% and its UK-wide audience up by 1%. GB News was the fastest-growing news website in the UK for the sixth consecutive month, according to Press Gazette’s monthly ranking.
In September 2023, the Ministry of Culture blocked Kloop’s website after the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) complained about an article profiling opposition politician, Ravshan Zheenbekov. Thus, outlets discrimination can be also influenced by political reasons, with advertisers declining to do business with media that are perceived as ideological enemies or generally unfavorable to their interests. Likewise, The vanguard of trustworthy online resources have also focused on identifying the political bias of the newspapers based on their audiences [18, 19]. They infer the political leaning of the outlet from the stand of their readers. These results complement our research as they also show a tendency of the outlets to cater content design to a specific audience.
It acquires, develops, and operates television stations and community websites. The company owns and operates several local TV stations across the country, each of which produces local news for broadcast and online consumption. Nexstar acquired Tribune Media in 2019, increasing its range and reach of television and print news media. Believe it or not, most reporters get leads for their stories from private citizens letting them know what’s going on in the world!
It got a makeover in 1957 and a new name and was relaunched to attract a broader audience. Its editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, is one of the most recognized media figures whose leadership has helped steer Vogue as one of the leading voices in fashion. She has been credited for solidifying high fashion with street style and infusing celebrity culture into the pages of Vogue.
While Fox News has a large audience overall, the other outlets that consistent conservatives turn to do not have much reach beyond this conservative base. Fewer than 10% of digitally connected U.S adults got news about government and politics from any of these sources in the previous week. Unless otherwise noted, our media bias ratings are based on online, written content.
In this work, we attempt to shed some light on the audience targeting patterns of newspapers, using the Chilean media ecosystem. First, we use the gravity model to analyze geography as a factor in explaining audience reachability. This shows that some newspapers are indeed driven by geographical factors (mostly local news outlets) but some others are not (national-distribution outlets). For those which are not, we use a regression model to study the influence of socioeconomic and political characteristics in news outlets adoption. We conclude that indeed larger, national-distribution news outlets target populations based on these factors, rather than on geography or immediacy.
It has the distinction of being the first television channel in history to serve 24-hour news - a staple feature now of many prominent news outlets and a cultural phenomenon in its own right. Media outlets are trusted sources of information for millions worldwide, offering in-depth reports and insightful commentary on the news that matters the most. Staying informed of the media landscape is critical, and quality journalism is still needed and relied upon by many today.
Brooklyn’s largest local news site, covering the diversity of the Brooklyn neighborhoods since 2008, and the news, issues, events, and businesses that matter to their residents. Over the past decade, social media has become an integral part of our lives. Getting your story covered on the television news used to be the best way to tell your clients’ story. And while TV coverage is still relevant, there are some facts you need to know before pitching your stories to TV stations. Publishers could see more success if they use their resources to empower skilled journalists and foster new talent, rather than trying to find people who can fit into an ever evolving editorial strategy. The near-unavoidable nature of online surveillance has presented similarly thorny issues for other privacy-centric organizations.
Experienced journalists who have yet to see the Eras tour, perhaps this is your biggest break yet. The role also requires the reporter to “chronicle the biggest moments on the next portions of Taylor Swift’s tour” and travel internationally. While no journalism job is perfect, a new role posted by Gannett, the US media company, may just be a Taylor Swift fan’s wildest dream.
Cardin also denounced Hungary’s treatment of the U.S. ambassador to Budapest, David Pressman, whom he met a day earlier. A business-friendly ‘Industrial Deal’ is gaining adherents as EU election approaches and anxiety over climate policy rises. We use Hotjar in order to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize this service and experience. Lukashenko's regime regularly targets those who have voiced opposition to his rule or openly hold pro-democracy views and continues to crack down on those with links to the mass protests that followed the Belarusian presidential election in 2020. Ask DAG also has answers to many questions Secretariat staff may have about resources. Secretariat staff at UN duty stations should contact their closest library to see what resources are available to them.
In this tree, Halk TV and Tele 1 are the only Group A (independent) outlets whose videos are recommended by YouTube to Medyascope’s viewers. Most of the rest are recommendations to small channels (yellow) focused on street interviews, one of them being Ahsen TV (brown), a staunchly Islamist/conservative publisher. Group A’s Sözcü, Oda TV, Cumhuriyet and Yeniçağ, and Group B’s Habertürk and Hürriyet are closer to perform a bridging role between these groups in this regard. Teyit, Medyascope, Evrensel and Karar, on the other hand, have an important function as “outer connectors” of diverse audiences within the independent media audience.
Six of the biggest newsbrands by audience size saw a smaller audience in August compared to the same month last year, according to data from Ipsos iris. ITV was the only top ten newsbrand by audience size to see a year-on-year audience boost in another slow month for the UK’s biggest newsbrands. Among the top ten, Metro (14.6 million, down 26% year-on-year) and The Telegraph (13.5 million, down 27%) saw the biggest drops, each shedding more than a quarter of their audiences. The BBC was again the UK’s biggest newsbrand by audience size (38.3 million visitors, reaching 77% of the UK online population aged over 15), while Mail Online was once again in second place ahead of The Sun in third.
They were the only four newsbrands to reach at least half of UK internet users aged over 15 in August. Reach regional sites dominated the list of fastest-growing newsbrands in the UK in October, taking the four top spots, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the 50 biggest online news names. The Sun has historically been in second place behind the BBC, although Mail Online was ahead of the News UK brand in May, June, August, September and October. In 10 of Kosovo's 38 municipalities, where Serbs represent a majority, they have been able to make payments in dinars or withdraw dinars from the ATMs of Serbian-based banks. The EU urges Kosovo to ensure a sufficiently long transition period and to find a negotiated solution to this issue in the framework of the EU-facilitated Dialogue,” he added.
Financial Times (53.9 million minutes, up 15% month-on-month) and Bristol Live (12.8 million minutes, up 11% month-on-month) were the two other brands to see double-digit growth on this engagement metric in June. The BBC was the biggest newsbrand reaching 39 million people (79% reach), while second-biggest was The Sun (27.8 million visitors, 56% reach). This article was changed on 9 September and 12 September to reflect the removal of a brand, and addition of others in line with Press Gazette's 100 newsbrands list. Month-on-month changes in page views and total minutes were removed for the BBC due to a change in the way BBC reports its traffic to Ipsos making June to July comparisons not reflective of performance.
Ipsos’ data measures the total unduplicated number of people who used a brand’s websites and apps in a given month and includes all traffic, not necessarily just news. The mass media is one of the social forces with the strongest transformative power. According to Herman and Chomsky’s Propaganda Model (PM) [1], there are many factors that shape the distribution and influence of news media coverage. Two of the most important factors are the geographic reach of newspapers (national versus regional newspapers), the direct targeting of specific sectors of the population, and/or the political ideology of the media outlet itself. The PM states that each linguistic account of an event must pass through five filters that define what is newsworthy. One such filter, the advertising filter (the second in the PM), predicts that outlets will try to cater to a target demographic’s expectations, rather than being fair in their treatment of what is news.
“Turkey’s internet media is doing what can be described as ‘fast food newsmaking.’ Most outlets copy-paste each other’s content or following editorial policies burdened by their ideological baggage,” Kapsül editor Minez Bayülgen said. It was also noted that the top results in 94 of the 541 trending searches featured local media outlets such as Des Moines Register and the Houston Chronicle. We also studied the Turkish media outlets’ presence and interaction on YouTube, which is a key platform for many of them, including the broadcasters like Halk TV and next-generation video-based news outlets like Medyascope.
Not surprisingly, the group that falls farther from the predicted coverage is dominated by the newspapers in the capital city (i.e., Santiago) and with a national scope. These are expected to be the ones with the most prominent political and socioeconomic bias, given that they are the most influential and the ones that dominate news production. Their leading position also ensures that they receive the biggest share in the investment of advertisers.
Make things easy for journalists by sending them press releases in a convenient format (eg email), written in a suitable style. Make sure you are available to answer any questions they may have about the press release. A later arrival, Vox was officially launched in 2014 by Ezra Klein, Melissa Bell, and Matthew Yglesias.
For example, 63% of those who don’t turn to Newsmax for political news say they don’t know enough about the outlet to decide whether it is part of the mainstream media or not. Respondents who use an outlet for political news are more likely to say that outlet is part of the mainstream media than those who don’t turn to it. For example, 92% of those who got political news from CNN in the past week consider the cable network part of the mainstream media, compared with a smaller share of those who didn’t get political news from CNN (82%). The remaining six outlets in the survey – five of which began as digital entities – draw different responses from the public, with a plurality or majority of Americans saying they don’t know enough to decide whether each one is part of the mainstream media or not.
Close behind the Sun were the Mirror’s group of sites and apps which reached 24.8m people (50% reach). The Sun’s websites and apps reached 28.4m people (57% of internet users aged over 15), putting it narrowly ahead of Mail Online which reached 25.6m people (51% reach). Four UK newsbrands reached more than half of the UK online population in January, according to data from Ipsos iris. Reuters, which last year put its content behind a paywall, was the second-fastest growing news brand, reaching 4.6m people (up 25% month-on-month). Two of the top three fastest growing newsbrands in the UK in March were from America, continuing a strong run for US newsbrands in the UK in recent months.
To date, there has been comparatively little large-scale, quantitative research on the relationship between the quality and diversity of the content generated by the media, and the socioeconomic indices of a particular area of coverage. In this paper, we try to find whether or not an outlet’s coverage deviates from the purely geographic influence to a more sophisticated behavior involving the weight of political and socioeconomic interests for example, as operationalized by Prat and Strömberg. We examine the degree to which different geographic locations in the same regions are covered by existing news outlets using Chilean social media data. We quantify how much of this coverage can be explained by a natural geographic targeting (e.g., local newspapers will give more importance to local news), and how much can be attributed to the political and socioeconomic profile of the areas they serve. To find these coverage effects as predicted by the PM and PS models, we look for empirical evidence in the massive adoption of social networks. More specifically, we use statistical models that show how much of the distribution of Twitter followers can be explained based on the geographic, political and socioeconomic features of the different areas.
But as a smart and savvy public relations professional, you already know that digital news is the place to be. More often than not, social media influencers haven’t received the editorial training that professional journalists have. This holds especially true among young people who use apps like TikTok and Instagram. Last month, as part of the regulatory push on data privacy, the FTC issued a $2 million fine against the advertising tech firm OpenX for illegally collecting and monetizing location data from children on a mass scale. Government-funded media is defined as outlets where the government provides some or all of the outlet’s funding and may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content. We may use external sources similar to this one in order to determine when this label is applied.
Both MSNBC and Fox News are mentioned by 5% of those who are mostly liberal. Those in other ideological groups name the New York Times, NPR and MSNBC less frequently as top news sources. In the drop-down menu, if you select TikTok, you’ll see a sorted list of the media outlets using TikTok to distribute news and engage audiences.
Earlier this month, Press Gazette reported on the wide reach of some local newsbrands such as MEN outside their local areas. In February, the New York Times, likely helped by its acquisition of popular word game Wordle, was the fastest growing newsbrand in the UK, more than tripling its month-on-month audience. This month the publisher saw a more modest gain of 5% to reach 1.2m people. Reach’s local news aggregator In Your Area (audience of 9.7m, up 4%) was third-fastest growing. They were among just nine newsbrands that had more visitors in April than March. Among the whole top 50, Reach’s Irish Mirror - the Dublin-based sister title to the UK daily - was the fastest growing.
As in previous months, visits to several local and regional news sites were also significantly higher year-on-year. Reach-owned MyLondon was the fourth fastest-growing site in August with visits up 27% from 6.4 million to 8.2 million, while another Reach property WalesOnline was sixth (16.4 million visits - up 19%). The third fastest-growing was aljazeera.com which was up 29% to 4.6 million visits according to Press Gazette’s exclusive ranking of the country’s most popular news websites. The BBC was again the leading site by far for number of visits in October (619.9 million) - counting five times as many as to second-place dailymail.co.uk (133.1 million visitors). In third place was theguardian.com while the Express site came in fourth place with 70.1 million visits last month. The rest of the top ten news sites by volume of visits in October, all saw year-on-year falls in traffic, according to data from web analytics firm Similarweb.
While the additional URL means that not all growth will be organic, the brand nevertheless is seeing a large growth in its online audience. Violence against sexual minorities by family members is not uncommon in the Islamic republic, where senior officials often address them with derogatory terms, such as "inhuman" or "sick," fanning homophobic sentiment. According to a 2020 poll published by the 6rang advocacy group, 62 percent of LGBT members surveyed in Iran had said that they had experienced one or more forms of violence by their immediate family. Nearly 30 percent of them complained of sexual violence, while 77 percent said they had been subjected to physical violence.
Without sustainable resources public interest media simply cannot deliver and sustain their operations. https://images.google.bg/url?q=https://penzu.com/p/d691dac95e15c42a employs more than 11,000 people and is the largest US newspaper publisher “as measured by total daily circulation”, per the Library of Congress. This viral job posting comes in the wake of the company undergoing several rounds of layoffs in the last year, resulting in hundreds of workers being let go or furloughed.
Best-ranked in 17th place was US-based Healthline Media, publisher of sites including medicalnewstoday.com and healthline.com (12.3 million people). It was followed by Digital Spy (7.1 million people, ranked 27th), and Which? The fourth biggest newsbrand was Mail Online (23.6 million visitors, 47% reach), The Independent was fifth while The Guardian, whose publisher Guardian Media Group this month posted its highest revenue since 2008, was sixth (20.4 million visitors, 41% reach). The Daily Express was the fastest-growing top ten newsbrand by audience size in August, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the UK’s top 50 biggest names in news. Among the top five biggest newsbrands, both the Mirror and the Guardian rose up the ranking one place, while Mail Online dropped two places into fifth on our list. Brands such as Apple and Google, while well-known names in news, are excluded from our list given the wide reach of their other non-news content.
Manchester Evening News continued to slip down the table after dropping out of the top ten earlier this year. It was ranked fifteenth in October (audience of 11.9 million, down 33% year-on-year). MEN is no longer the largest regional newsbrand in our ranking, as Birmingham Live was ranked thirteenth (audience of 12.5 million). Among the whole top 50, GB News, which switched to a new .com URL earlier this year, saw the largest audience growth by far, with audience up 758% year-on-year to 6 million. This represents the seventh month in a row for which GB News has been the fastest-growing newsbrand in the UK top 50.
