Statement Lock
The lock is designed to be hung externally on the doors of commercial vehicles (trucks & vans) offering an evident deterrent and a higher level of security. It can be used together with other anti-theft devices, and operates independently of the manufacturer's locking system.
The LOCK statement creates shared locks on all tables that are which are listed in the table specification. If there is a viewtable specified, then the lock creates shared locking on all base tables that are underneath the viewtable. The LOCK table command is used for locking all tables in a specific database, a specific row, or even a specific table. If only the table name is entered before the table's name only the table that is that is specified is locked. If a row_spec> is specified, only the row in the table denoted by the key values or position in a results table is locked.
A ROW-EXCLUSIVE locks prevents simultaneous data modifications from altering and deleting rows in the table. This lock type is acquired by UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT, MERGE, and VACUUM statements. It can also be acquired through ANALYZE CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY, and certain ALTER TABLE and ALTER VIEW statements.
When a lock has been set to ROW XCLUSIVE, any updates or deletions must be completed before the lock owner releases the lock. This prevents deadlocks between concurrent sessions that modify rows.
If a transaction is using the ROW-EXCLUSIVE lock and another session tries to update the identical rows, the first transaction will encounter a duplicate key error. The second session must wait until the current transaction commits or rolls back and then can obtain an ROW SHARE lock for the row to continue the operation.
ROW SHARED lock mode is acquired through UPDATE, INERT DELETE, MERGE statements. It is also acquired by ANALYZE CREATE STATISTICS and COMMENT ON statements. This lock mode shields the table from changes to the schema concurrently or VACUUM runs.
The LOCK TABLE WITH HOLD clause lets you to set an execution lock on the specific procedure for a specific duration of time. If another program tries to execute the same procedure on the same connection, the program will be stopped until the lock on execution is released.
