Engineering of synthetic microbial communities is emerging as a powerful new paradigm for performing various industrially, medically, and environmentally important processes. To reach the fullest potential, however, this approach requires further development in many aspects, a key one being regulating the community composition. Here we leverage well-established mechanisms in ecology which govern the relative abundance of multispecies ecosystems and develop a new tool for programming the composition of synthetic microbial communities. Using a simple model system consisting of two microorganisms Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida, which occupy different but partially overlapping thermal niches, we demonstrated that temperature regulation could be used to enable coexistence and program the community composition. We first investigated a constant temperature regime and showed that different temperatures led to different community compositions. Next, we invented a new cycling temperature regime and showed that it can dynamically tune the microbial community, achieving a wide range of compositions depending on parameters that are readily manipulatable. Our work provides conclusive proof of concept that temperature regulation is a versatile and powerful tool capable of programming compositions of synthetic microbial communities.
Trauma survivors with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been found to have cognitive impairment. But little is known about these outcomes among Latino and Asians who comprise more than 80% of the U.S. immigrant population. They also experience disparities in PTSD and dementia care albeit increased exposure to trauma. This study aimed to (1) examine the association between trauma exposures and PTSD with cognitive impairment in a sample of Latino and Asian older adults; and (2) assess whether sleep quality attenuated the PTSD-cognitive impairment association.

Endocrine and metabolic associations have been recently reported in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS); however, fertility was only rarely investigated in women and not at all in men.

A cross-sectional, matched controlled, population-based study was designed. The association between HS and male and female infertility was evaluated in patients with HS (n=4191) and age- and gender-matched controls (n=20941), while utilising the Clalit Health Services databases, the largest community-based health maintenance organisation in Israel.
Hidradenitis suppurativa was associated with infertility in males and females over all reproductive-age groups, especially among individuals aged 36-45years (OR 4.50, 95%CI 2.55-7.93, P<0.001), and in female patients (OR 3.10, 95%CI 2.57-3.74, P<0.001). Typically, modern UV-Vis spectrophotometers can scan in the region of approximately 200-1000 nm in the electromagnetic spectrum, where users do not extend the use of the instrument's full capability in a laboratory. In this study, the full potential of UV-Vis spectrophotometry (multiwavelength collection) was used to examine bacterial growth phases when treated with antibiotics showcasing the ability to understand the point of resistance when an antibiotic is introduced into the media and therefore understand the biochemical changes of the infectious pathogens. A multiplate reader demonstrated a high throughput experiment (96 samples) to understand the growth of Escherichia coli when varied concentrations of the antibiotic tetracycline was added into the well plates. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis were then used as the data mining techniques to interpret the UV-Vis spectral data and generate machine learning "proof of principle" for the UV-Vis spectrophotometer plate reader. Results from this study showed that the PCA analysis provides an accurate yet simple visual classification and the recognition of E. coli samples belonging to each treatment. These data show significant advantages when compared to the traditional OD600 method where we can now understand biochemical changes in the system rather than a mere optical density measurement. Due to the unique experimental setup and procedure that involves indirect use of antibiotics, the same test could be used for obtaining practical information on the type, resistance, and dose of antibiotic necessary to establish the optimum diagnosis, treatment, and decontamination strategies for pathogenic and antibiotic resistant species.
