Apart from a few exceptions, when olive oil was used as a reaction medium, the combined use of garlic, cabbage, broccoli, shiitake mushroom, and makonbu improved the total Z-isomer ratio of lycopene after heating compared to the separate use of the tested ingredients. However, when onion was used together with the other ingredients, the Z-isomer ratio significantly decreased compared to its individual use. Moreover, when garlic, cabbage, broccoli, shiitake mushroom, and makonbu were used with sesame and mustard oils, that exhibit higher Z-isomerizationpromoting effect than that of olive oil, the lycopene Z-isomerization reaction was further enhanced. However, when onion was combined with these oils, the Z-isomer ratio decreased compared to that measured upon the combined use of onion with olive oil. Our results on these synergistic effects are not only important for the food and drink manufacturing industries but also for daily home cooking.
This study is aimed to compare the efficacy of the 2017 Japan Atherosclerosis Society (JAS) familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) criteria, which focuses on only 3 essential clinical manifestations, with that of Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) FH criteria, which adopts a scoring system of multiple elements.Methods and ResultsA total of 680 Japanese dyslipidemic participants (51% men) were enrolled between 2006 and 2018, all of whom had full evaluations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, Achilles tendon X-rays, family history records, and genetic analysis of FH-associated genes (LDLR,APOB, andPCSK9). Predictive values for the existence of FH mutations by both clinical criteria were evaluated. Overall, 173 FH patients were clinically diagnosed by using the 2017 JAS criteria and 100, 57, 156, and 367 subjects were also diagnosed as having definite, probable, possible, and unlikely FH by the DLCN FH criteria, respectively. The positive and negative likelihood ratio predicting the presence of FH mutations by using the 2017 JAS FH criteria were 19.8 and 0.143, respectively; whereas, using the DLCN criteria of definite, probable, and possible FH, the ratios were 29.2 and 0.489, 9.70 and 0.332, and 3.43 and 0.040, respectively.

To overcome these issues, we created a synthetic bacterial community of the aquatic plant, duckweed. The synthetic community established with six bacterial strains showed a stable composition for 50 days, which may have been because duckweed maintains a similar physiological status through its clonal reproduction. Additionally, the synthetic community reflected the taxonomic structure of the natural duckweed microbiome at the family level. These results suggest the potential of a duckweed-based synthetic community as a useful model system for examining the community assembly mechanisms of the plant microbiome.
Few studies have investigated the association between temporal change in QT interval and incident heart failure (HF). The aim of this study is to examine this association in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.Methods and ResultsA secondary analysis was performed for the ARIC study. Overall, 10,274 participants (age 60.0±5.7 years, 45.7% male and 19.5% black) who obtained a 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) at both Visit 1 (1987-1989) and Visit 3 (1993-1995) in the ARIC study were included. QT interval duration was corrected by using Bazett's formula (QTc). The change in corrected QT interval duration (∆QTc) was calculated by subtracting QTc at Visit 3 from Visit 1. The main outcome measure was incident HF. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to assess the association between ∆QTc and incident HF. During a median follow up of 19.5 years, 1,833 cases (17.8%) of incident HF occurred. ∆QTc was positively associated with incident HF (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03, 1.08, per 10 ms increase, P<0.001; HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.08, 1.36, T3 vs. T1, P=0.002), after adjusting for traditional cardiovascular risk factor, QTc and QRS duration.
