The structure of temperament of a person with poor control of bronchial asthma can be characterized. Patients with poor asthma control have a higher level of neuroticism, psychoticism and propensity to lie, compared with the healthy population and subjects with good or partial bronchial asthma control.
The anti-cancer properties of high-dose intravenous ascorbic acid have been demonstrated in various malignancies. In our recent study, we tested topically applied ascorbic acid to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and achieved a good clinical response.
Based on these results, we decided to examine the efficacy and tolerability of high-dose intravenous ascorbic acid (IVA) for locally advanced BCC.
In this pilot study, patients diagnosed with locally advanced BCC who were not amenable to radiation, surgical or local therapy (no other treatment option was available at the time) received intravenous ascorbic acid (1-1.8 g/kg), in an outpatient setting, 1-3 times per week for a mean duration of 42 ±23.6 weeks. This therapy was generally well tolerated.
Among 4 patients who had a total of 165 (mean 41 ±51, range 1-114) skin lesions, 3 patients achieved stable disease and one had progressive disease. There was substantial variability in individual tumor response to therapy. With the aid of two-photon microscopy and second harmonic generation imaging techniques, alterations in collagen structure were observed between tumor nests during IVA therapy.
Our results suggest that IVA is well tolerated in a small group of patients with extensive BCCs. However, in the era of smoothened (Smo) receptor inhibitors, it may only be considered as an adjuvant therapy in treatment-resistant cases.

Despite the known role of pollen allergens in causing allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals, there are few publications investigating the relationship between pollen exposure in different regions and the prevalence of inhalant allergy.
To assess the association between the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma and the degree of exposure to pollen in various regions of Poland.
Completed questionnaires of 9,443 subjects living in four urban centres (Wroclaw, Katowice, Warsaw, Bialystok), collected within part of the ECAP project, were analyzed. Children aged 6-7 (
= 2,278), adolescents aged 13-14 (
= 2,418), and adults aged 20-44 (
= 4,747) constituted 24.2%, 25.6% and 50.3% of the respondents, respectively. The clinical part (including skin prick tests, an assay of Timothy grass-specific IgE), was attended by 24% of the respondents. Data from 6-year pollen monitoring served to characterize birch and grass pollen seasons.
We found insignificant negative associations between the duration of birch pollen season and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. There were insignificant inverse associations between the number of days with above-threshold and high grass pollen concentrations, total grass pollen count and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. Associations noted in the clinical part were also non-significant; however, these trends were not uniform across the age groups.

Eyelid tumours mostly originated from skin and its appendeges. External carcinogens like UV radiation causes cell damages in the eyelid skin and contributes to carcinogenesis. Apoptosis is a very important mechanism to prevent these damage and probable neoplatic change.
To compare caspase-3, p53 and Bcl-2 levels between patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the eyelid and healthy individuals.
Pathology archives from October 2012 to April 2015 were scanned for BCC biopsies of the eyelid and tissue removed during blepharoplasty and entropion procedures. A total of 36 specimens were found. The specimens were divided into two groups BCC group and controls (consisting of eyelid tissue removed during routine blepharoplasty). The pathology specimens were then stained using p53, Bcl-2 and caspase-3 stains and the intensity of staining was graded on a 0-3 scale.
Samples from a total of 36 patients were included in the study. Eighteen (50.0%) patients were female. There were 13 patients in the BCC group and 23 patients in the control group. The mean age was 66.0 ±10.8 years in the BCC group, and 65.61 ±11.22 years in the control group. The caspase-3 staining was lower in the BCC group than in the control group. No significant differences were found between the BCC group and the control group in terms of p53 levels or Bcl-2 levels (both of them,
= 1.000).

The incidence and mortality of melanoma are rising rapidly. Despite ongoing research and the introduction of new therapeutic methods, advanced melanoma is still considered incurable.
