How anaerobic bacteria protect themselves against nitric oxide-induced stress is controversial, not least because far higher levels of stress were used in the experiments on which most of the literature is based than bacteria experience in their natural environments. This results in chemical damage to enzymes that inactivates their physiological function. This review illustrates how transcription control mechanisms reveal physiological roles of the encoded gene products. Evidence that the hybrid cluster protein, Hcp, is a major high affinity NO reductase in anaerobic bacteria is reviewed if so, its trans-nitrosation activity is a nonspecific secondary consequence of chemical inactivation. Whether the flavorubredoxin, NorV, is equally effective at such low [NO] is unknown. YtfE is proposed to be an enzyme rather than a source of iron for the repair of iron-sulfur proteins damaged by nitrosative stress. Any reaction catalyzed by YtfE needs to be revealed. The concentration of NO that accumulates in the cytoplasm of anaerobic bacteria is unknown, but indirect evidence indicates that it is in the pM to low nM range. Also unknown are the functions of the NO-inducible cytoplasmic proteins YgbA, YeaR, or YoaG. Experiments to resolve some of these questions are proposed.
Recent studies have demonstrated a lack of reproducibility of radiomic features in response to variations in CT parameters. In addition, reproducibility of radiomic features has not been well established in clinical datasets. We aimed to investigate the effects of a wide range of CT acquisition and reconstruction parameters on radiomic features in a realistic setting using clinical low dose lung cancer screening cases. We performed univariable and multivariable explorations to consider the effects of individual parameters and the simultaneous interactions between three different acquisition/reconstruction parameters of radiation dose level, reconstructed slice thickness, and kernel.
A cohort of 89 lung cancer screening patients were collected that each had a solid lung nodule >4mm diameter. A computational pipeline was used to perform a simulation of dose reduction of the raw projection data, collected from patient scans. To describe the outcomes of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) transported to hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam.
This was a multi-centre observational study of patients presenting with OHCA to one of five tertiary care hospital EDs in Hanoi from 2017 to 2019.
We analysed data from 239 OHCA cases of which 70.7% were witnessed, and 8.4% received bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The emergency medical services (EMS) transported 20.5% of cases to hospital with the remaining being transported by private vehicle. No patients received external defibrillation before arriving to hospital. Return of spontaneous circulation in hospital was 33.1%, with 3.8% of patients survived to hospital discharge and only one patient (0.4%) discharged from hospital with a favourable neurological outcome.
In cases of OHCA in Hanoi, both the proportion of cases receiving bystander CPR and EMS transportation were small. Urgent investments in pre-hospital capacity, training and capabilities are required to improve outcomes for OHCA in Hanoi.

However, the evolution of AS and its influence on grain development in diploid grass and valuable polyploid wheat crops are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a pipeline for the analysis of alternatively spliced transcript isoforms, which takes the high sequence similarity among polyploid wheat subgenomes into account. Through analysis of synteny and detection of collinearity of homoeologous subgenomes, conserved and specific AS events across five wheat and grass species were identified. A global analysis of the regulation of AS in diploid grass and polyploid wheat grains revealed diversity in AS events not only between the endosperm, pericarp and embryo overdevelopment, but also between subgenomes. Analysis of AS in homoeologous triads of polyploid wheats revealed evolutionary divergence between gene-level and transcript-level regulation of embryogenesis. Evolutionary age analysis indicated that the generation of novel transcript isoforms has occurred in young genes at a more rapid rate than in ancient genes. These findings, together with the development of comprehensive AS resources for wheat and grass species, advance understanding of the evolution of regulatory features of AS during embryogenesis and grain development in wheat.
Some children with asthma experience exacerbations despite long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) treatment. While this variability is partly caused by genetic variation, no genome-wide study until now has investigated which genetic factors associated with risk of exacerbations despite LABA use in children with asthma. We aimed to assess whether genetic variation was associated with exacerbations in children treated with LABA from a global consortium.
A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (meta-GWAS) was performed in 1,425 children and young adults with asthma (age 6-21years) with reported regular use of LABA from six studies within the PiCA consortium using a random effects model. The primary outcome of each study was defined as any exacerbation within the past 6 or 12months, including at least one of the following 1) hospital admissions for asthma, 2) a course of oral corticosteroids or 3) emergency room visits because of asthma.
