BACKGROUND Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an evolving health problem in the aging male population. Chronic lowgrade inflammation is a critical component of ED pathogenesis and a probable intermediary of endothelial dysfunction, especially in metabolic diseases, with the inclusion of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. OBJECTIVE This review will present an overview of preclinical and clinical data regarding common inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of ED associated with metabolic diseases and the effect of antiinflammatory drugs on ED. METHODS A literature search of existing pre-clinical and clinical studies was performed on databases [Pubmed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Embase] from January 2000 to October 2019. RESULTS Low-grade inflammation is a possible pathological role in endothelial dysfunction as a consequence of ED and other related metabolic diseases. Increased inflammation and endothelial/prothrombotic markers can be associated with the presence and degree of ED. Pharmacological therapy and modification of lifestyle and risk factors may have a significant role in the recovery of erectile response through reduction regarding inflammatory marker levels. CONCLUSION Inflammation is the least common denominator in the pathology of ED and metabolic disorders. The inflammatory process of ED includes a shift in the complex interactions of cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. These data have provided that anti-inflammatory agents could be used as a therapeutic opportunity in the prevention and treatment of ED. Further research on inflammation-related mechanisms underlying ED and the effect of therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing inflammation is required for a better understanding of the pathogenesis and successful management of ED. Partnering with campus information technology services, librarians developed a specialized role in Canvas. Librarians also used Springshare's LibApps LTI (learning tools interoperability) to integrate research guides in Canvas, using course metadata to map guides to the appropriate subject or course. Evaluation of the impact of adding a Librarian role and mapping research guides to the Canvas LMS is ongoing and indicates these changes have affected the way students are accessing library resources.In 2017, Document Delivery Services (DDS) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Medical Library launched a customer satisfaction survey. The last time a survey of this nature was implemented was in 2009, before switching to ILLiad for the management of resource sharing requests. Due to the changing nature of content accessibility and online research methods, the DDS team felt that the time was right to survey their users again to seek feedback in support of service improvements. Questions were created to evaluate users' satisfaction and knowledge of the service and related resources. New survey results were compared where possible to those received in 2009 to determine if survey results had changed over time. In a search of the top ten health-related Google searches of 2018, the quality of information sources in the preview content varied both within and between sources. Librarians' knowledge of how a Google search responds to health inquiries of local interest can help them fill in gaps and curate or create more informative health materials for consumers.This case study describes the process librarians at a large research university used to evaluate a systematic review searching service. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched for studies with a local, health sciences author. Data on librarian involvement, search quality, and standards adherence were recorded. Results of the assessment indicate a gradual increase in librarian authorship or acknowledgement over time, a moderate improvement in adherence to reporting standards over time, and insight into which departments better adhere to standards. This review aims to explore the experience of medical learners who are print disabled as it relates to improving access to digital and physical resources and removing encountered barriers in the medical library. By applying both the critical disability and self-efficacy theories to persons with print disabilities, librarians can understand learner behavior surrounding motivation, determination, and perceived challenges in using library resources and services.Library liaisons from three universities distributed an anonymous survey to graduate occupational therapy students to gauge preferred methods of communication when conducting research. This article discusses three findings whom the students prefer to turn to when seeking research assistance, which methods of communication students prefer, and how long students spend searching before asking for assistance. From 193 responses, the liaisons reasoned that students prefer consulting with their peers before seeking help from librarians or faculty or instructors and they prefer assistance face-to-face. Additionally, the majority are willing to research from 30 min to one hour before seeking research help.The purpose of this article is to highlight the value of a partnership between library services and continuing medical education (CME) teams. Examples of a successful partnership between library services and CME within a health system will be shown. Through team collaboration, library and CME services provide quick access to educational resources and activities which benefit the delivery of optimal health care.The protractor-based goniometer is the standard instrument used to measure finger range of motion (ROM). However, the method is often complicated to apply and places a burden on the investigator. Here, we developed a new method for finger ROM measurement using a smartphone. This study was performed to determine the reliability and convenience of this new method. The ROM in 1007 finger joints was measured by both the standard and new method and the data were analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The smartphone ICC score was high (0.927), and the average measurement time per joint was 49% lower with the smartphone compared to the goniometer. The results indicated that the smartphone-based measurement method had the same reliability as the conventional goniometer, in addition to an excellent measurement time.Background Bone conductive implants (BCI) represent one possible solution for rehabilitation of single-sided deafness (SSD).Aims The aim of the present study was to verify the efficacy of bone conduction implantation in subjects with unilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss and contralaterally impaired hearing, that is, asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), and to compare it with known BCI indications for SSD.Material and methods Twenty-one subjects received BCI for either SSD or AHL. All of the subjects underwent a battery of audiological and subjective tests, Data were collected and statistically evaluated within and between the SSD group and the AHL group.Results A PTA threshold gain was observed in AHL patients along with improved values in speech audiometry in quiet and noise. The two visual analogue scale evaluations (QoL and QoS) and the GBI showed significantly better scores in AHL patients compared to SSD patients.Conclusions BCI provided improvement for auditory or speech recognition in AHL subjects, as compare to SSD. From these findings, it is possible to predict a positive role of BCI for some audiological aspects of AHL subjects that are generally not present or not detectable in SSD cases.Background Generally, vertical component of the skull vibratory nystagmus (VCN) is ignored in the clinical practise. Thus, the relative contribution of the vestibular organs in the presence of VCN remains unknown.Objectives To determine the association between vertical semicircular canal (vSCC) function and the presence of VCN.Material and methods Comparisons were made between Video Head Impulse Test and SVINT (100 Hz) results at the time of the acute peripheral vestibular lesion (PVL) and at the post-acute phase in patients diagnosed PVL. Later on, a paired analysis was performed restricting the assessments to patients with vestibular explorations in both the acute and post-acute phases.Results In an univariable analysis, larger mean total gain differences (TGD) between vSCC VOR gains, significantly related with the appearance of VCN in nystagmography in the acute phase (p = .001), unlike the post-acute phase (p = .46). After a multivariate analysis, mean TGD was the only predictive factor of the VCN (p = .013).
