Citrus unshiu has been shown to exhibit antimicrobial effects against citrus diseases. PG490 In the present study, C. unshiu was divided into flavedo, albedo, fruits, and leaves; the inhibitory effects of these extracts on Streptococcus mutans, a major pathogen of dental caries, were investigated.
C. unshiu specimens were separated into flavedo, albedo, fruits, and leaves. First, pH values and polyphenol amounts in Citrus extracts were measured. In addition, Citrus extract was added to the bacterial suspensions of S. mutans MT8148, and inhibitory effects of C. unshiu extracts on MT8148 for antimicrobial activity, bacterial growth, and biofilm formation were analyzed. These assays were also performed using C. sinensis extracts.
Among these extracts, albedo exhibited a pH value closest to neutral, while the fruits exhibited the most acidic pH value; the pH values significantly differed between these extracts (P < 0.05). In addition, the amounts of polyphenols were significantly higher in albedo than in other extracts (P < 0.001). All extracts showed inhibitory effects on MT8148 for antimicrobial activity, bacterial growth and biofilm formation. These inhibitory effects were significantly stronger in flavedo, albedo, and fruits, compared with leaves (P < 0.05). Furthermore, extracts of Citrus sinensis also showed inhibitory effects on S. mutans, although these effects were weaker than the effects of C. unshiu.
These results suggest that extracts from C. unshiu fruits exhibit inhibitory effects on S. mutans, among which albedo may be especially useful for dental caries prevention due to its neutral pH and abundant polyphenols, in addition to its inhibitory effects.

However, the relevant biological exposure limits of COEs exposure has not been evaluated from telomere damage. The purpose of this study is to estimate benchmark dose (BMD) of urinary PAHs metabolites from COEs exposure based on telomere damage with RTL as a biomarker. A total of 544 exposed workers and 238 controls were recruited for participation. High-performance liquid chromatography and qPCR were used to detect concentrations of urinary mono-hydroxylated PAHs and relative telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes for all subjects. The benchmark dose approach was used to estimate benchmark dose (BMD) and its lower 95% confidence limit (BMDL) of urinary OH-PAHs of COEs exposure based on telomere damage. Our results showed that telomere length in the exposure group (0.75 (0.51, 1.08)) was shorter than that in the control group (1.05 (0.76,1.44))(P less then 0.05), and a dose-response relationship was shown between telomere damage and both 1-hydroxypyrene and 3-hydroxyphenanthrene in urine. The BMDL of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene from the optimal model for telomere damage was 1.96, 0.40, and 1.01 (μmol/mol creatinine) for the total, males, and females group, respectively. For 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, the BMDL was 0.94, 0.33, and 0.49 (μmol/mol creatinine) for the total, males, and females. These results contribute to our understanding of telomere damage induced by COEs exposure and provide a reference for setting potential biological exposure limits.
Transition of care (TOC) for management of anticoagulation from inpatient to outpatient setting for patients with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) poses serious safety concerns. We implemented a national quality improvement educational initiative to address this issue.
Pediatric and adult patients admitted for their first VTE were prospectively enrolled at 16 centers from January 2016 to December 2018. Patient demographics, VTE diagnosis, risk factors, and treatment characteristics were collected. There were two phases pre-intervention (PI) and quality intervention (QI). The PI phase assessed the quality and patient understanding and satisfaction of anticoagulation instructions given at hospital discharge and adherence to these instructions via a patient and/or caregiver feedback questionnaire (PFQ) and a patient knowledge questionnaire (PKQ) at 30days. The QI phase provided patient and/or caregiver enhanced education regarding anticoagulation therapy and VTE at hospital discharge using a comprehensive tisfaction of education given and care provided, and disease recognition.Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and early-life adversity (ELA) both negatively impact social neurobehavioral development, including social recognition memory. Importantly, while individuals with PAE are more likely to experience ELA, relatively few studies have assessed the interaction of these two early insults on adolescent social behavior development. Here, we combine animal models of PAE and ELA to investigate both their unique and interactive effects on social neurobehavioral function in early and late adolescent male and female rats. Behavioral testing was followed by assessment of hypothalamic expression of oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (AVP), key neuropeptides in the regulation of social behavior. Our results indicate that PAE and ELA have unique sex- and age-specific effects on social recognition memory and OT/AVP expression, with more pronounced neurobehavioral changes observed in males than in females in both early and late adolescence. Specifically, ELA impaired social recognition in early adolescent females regardless of prenatal treatment, while males showed deficits in both early and late adolescence in response to unique and interactive effects of PAE and ELA.
