Prenatal particle exposure has been shown to increase allergic responses in offspring. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess immunomodulatory properties, but it is unknown whether maternal exposure to CNTs interferes with offspring immune development. Here, C57Bl/6J female mice were intratracheally instilled with 67 of μg multiwalled CNTs on the day prior to mating. After weaning, tolerance and allergy responses were assessed in the offspring. Offspring of CNT-exposed (CNT offspring) and of sham-exposed dams (CTRL offspring) were intranasally exposed to ovalbumin (OVA) once weekly for 5 weeks to induce airway mucosal tolerance. Subsequent OVA sensitization and aerosol inhalation caused low or no OVA-specific IgE production and no inflammation. However, the CNT offspring presented with significantly lower OVA-specific IgG1 levels than CTRL offspring. In other groups of 5-week-old offspring, low-dose sensitization with OVA and subsequent OVA aerosol inhalation led to significantly lower OVA-specific IgG1 production in CNT compared to CTRL offspring. OVA-specific IgE and airway inflammation were non-significantly reduced in CNT offspring. The immunomodulatory effects of pre-gestational exposure to multiwalled CNTs were unexpected, but very consistent. The observations of suppressed antigen-specific IgG1 production may be of importance for infection or vaccination responses and warrant further investigation.Actomyosin based contractility in smooth muscle and non-muscle cells is regulated by signaling through the small GTPase Rho and by calcium-activated pathways. We use the myoepithelial cells of the Caenorhabditis elegans spermatheca to study the mechanisms of coordinated myosin activation in vivo. Here, we show that redox signaling modulates RHO-1/Rho activity in this contractile tissue. Exogenously added as well as endogenously generated hydrogen peroxide decreases spermathecal contractility by inhibition of RHO-1, which depends on a conserved cysteine in its nucleotide binding site (C20). Further, we identify an endogenous gradient of H2O2 across the spermathecal tissue, which depends on the activity of the cytosolic superoxide dismutase, SOD-1. Collectively, we show that SOD-1 mediated H2O2 production regulates the redox environment and fine-tunes Rho activity across the spermatheca through oxidation of RHO-1 C20.Purpose To estimate the prevalence and magnitude of diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy among people with diabetes mellitus in Katsina State.Methods A population-based cross-sectional study of persons aged 50 years and over in Katsina State Nigeria based on the rapid assessment of avoidable blindness survey plus diabetic retinopathy methodology. The study was conducted in November and December 2018.Results A total of 2,653 of the 2,807 (94.5%) enrolled persons were examined. The unadjusted prevalence of diabetes was 3.3% (95% CI 2.7-4.1) with females having higher risk of having diabetes than males (OR 1.04; (95% CI 1.00-1.07; P = .03). The age-sex adjusted magnitude of diabetes mellitus is 15,492 persons in the study population, but 60% of the people are unaware of their disease status. The proportion of people with diabetes mellitus and any retinopathy is 26.2% (95%CI 14.4-31.6); 15.8% in males and 35.7% in females. The proportion of people with diabetes mellitus with any maculopathy is 12.5% (95% CI 6.9 - 21.5). The proportion of people with diabetes mellitus having any retinopathy and/or maculopathy is 26.2% while that of a sight-threatening lesion is 7.5%.Conclusion The burden of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in the population is lower than national average and elsewhere. However, there is still need to establish a simple cost-effective diabetic retinopathy service for the population as the burden of the problem will only increase with time.Despite increased emphasis on educating students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, nearly half of U.S. college students who enroll in these programs fail to graduate with STEM degrees. Using archival data from the Motivation and Academic Achievement Database, we tested whether a motivation intervention to reframe causal attributions for academic setbacks improved graduation rates for college students in STEM disciplines (N = 496). Results showed that the intervention increased the odds of 8-year graduation for students who were at risk of college dropout. Findings highlight the potential of theory-informed psychological interventions to increase persistence to graduation for at-risk students in STEM fields.Craniofacial muscle pain is highly prevalent in temporomandibular disorders but is difficult to treat. Enhanced understanding of neurobiology unique to craniofacial muscle pain should lead to the development of novel mechanism-based treatments. Herein, we review recent studies to summarize neural pathways of craniofacial muscle pain. Nociceptive afferents in craniofacial muscles are predominantly peptidergic afferents enriched with TRPV1. Signals from peripheral glutamate receptors converge onto TRPV1, leading to mechanical hyperalgesia. Further studies are needed to clarify whether hyperalgesic priming in nonpeptidergic afferents or repeated acid injections also affect craniofacial muscle pain. Within trigeminal ganglia, afferents innervating craniofacial muscles interact with surrounding satellite glia, which enhances the sensitivity of the inflamed neurons as well as nearby uninjured afferents, resulting in hyperalgesia and ectopic pain originating from adjacent orofacial tissues. It improves therapeutic communication skills with clients. Additionally, it enhances critical thinking, problem solving, and confidence among students, in a non-threatening and safe environment, without posing a risk to actual patients. This paper describes the process of application of simulation for undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a mental health nursing course. The project aimed to determine the significance of simulation to improve the communication skills and confidence level, and to decrease the anxiety of undergraduate nursing students, prior to attending mental health clinical. The Experiential Learning (ELT), by Kolb in 1984, was chosen as a framework for the simulation strategy. The simulation experience was a stepwise process that comprised a briefing session with students to explain them the process and purpose of the simulation activity, followed by a two-day simulation experience. The experience comprised students' interaction with Simulated Patients (SP), who had been prepared to manifest symptoms of depression, mania, and schizophrenia.
