With the undergoing world outbreak of Fusarium wilt of bananas, it is essential to unravel all the possible process of dissemination of this disease. The host-pest interactions of the banana weevil with banana plants make this insect an important potential vector. This study, carried out in controlled conditions, explores the interaction between the banana weevil and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense race 1 (Foc), with a focus on the external and internal transport of viable fungal propagules.
Viable inoculum of Foc was detected very rapidly on external teguments and in the digestive tract of the insect, i.e. at the lowest time studied of 5min after contact with infected pseudostems. Maximal inoculum acquisition occurred after 1h contact with an inoculum source. External inoculum was higher than the inoculum present in the digestive tract, but external and internal inoculum had the same dynamics. After a contact of an infected source, external and internal inoculum decreased exponentially within 50 h, but weevils remained infested for a long time, as long as 2 or 3 days that would be enough for inoculum dispersal. Viable inoculum was also detected in feces. Foc strains isolated were pathogenic when inoculated to banana plants of the Gros Michel variety but did not provoke any symptom on Cavendish banana plants.
These results demonstrate that the infective structures of Foc remain externally viable in the digestive system and the excreta of the banana weevil. Such excreta are capable of making healthy banana plants of the Gros Michel variety. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to compare the long-term effects of different training modalities on anthropometric outcomes in patients with obesity. MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Web of Science were searched to identify the following (1) randomized controlled trials (RCTs); (2) conducted in adults with a mean body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 ; (3) comparing aerobic, resistance, combined, or high-intensity interval training head-to-head or to control for ≥6 months; and (4) reporting changes in body weight (BW), BMI, waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), or fat-free mass (FFM). Random-effects NMA models were fitted in a frequentist approach. GRADE framework was used to assess certainty of evidence. Thirty-two RCTs with 4774 participants with obesity were included in this review. Aerobic training was ranked as best for improving BW, BMI, and WC and combined training for improving FM, as well as equally with resistance training most effective for improving FFM. Low to moderate certainty of evidence supports use of aerobic training to improve anthropometric outcomes in obesity, and its combination with resistance training provides additional benefit for reducing FM and increasing FFM.E-cigarettes, which deliver vaporized nicotine, have dramatically risen in popularity in recent years, despite many unanswered questions about safety, efficacy in reducing dependence, and overall impact on public health. BAY-293 inhibitor In these studies, we sought to develop a protocol for vaporized e-cigarette nicotine self-administration in rats, as a foundation to better understand the differing effects of nicotine exposure routes on behavior and physiological function. We report a novel method that elicits robust nicotine vapor self-administration in male and female rats. Our findings indicate that 5-mg/ml nicotine vape solution provides a high level of consistency in lever-pressing behavior for both males and females. Moreover, in male rats, we find that such e-cigarette nicotine vapor induces similar blood levels of nicotine's main metabolite, cotinine, as that found with intravenous nicotine self-administration. Therefore, the breathing pattern during vapor exposure in males leads to similar levels of titrated nicotine intake as with intravenous nicotine self-administration. Interestingly, a differential effect was found in the females, in which the same conditions of vapor exposure led to decreased cotinine levels with vapor compared to intravenous self-administration. Finally, differences in nicotine-mediated locomotion provide further support of the physiological effects of e-cigarette vapor inhalation. If the intercurrent event is a consequence of treatment, randomization alone is no longer sufficient to meaningfully estimate the treatment effect. Analyses comparing the subgroups of patients without the intercurrent events for intervention and control will not estimate a causal effect. This is well known, but post-hoc analyses of this kind are commonly performed in drug development. An alternative approach is the principal stratum strategy, which classifies subjects according to their potential occurrence of an intercurrent event on both study arms.
