Integrating this technology into diabetes care at school can be complex with collaboration and safety considerations fundamental to success. This is the third article in a three-part series on the use of technology in managing diabetes in youth. The first article described CGM devices and provided tips for the school nurse in incorporating CGM into the student's individualized healthcare plan. The second article summarized insulin pump technologies, from conventional insulin pump therapy to advance automated insulin delivery systems and described keys to success with insulin pump technologies. The purpose of this article is to address some special considerations for facilitating the use of diabetes technology in the school setting. Topics to be discussed are tips on including insulin pump therapy in the student's individualized healthcare plan, safe use of diabetes technology during physical activity, and implications for school nursing practice.Background Little research to date has investigated the spectrum of bladder health in women, including both bladder function and well-being. Therefore, we expanded our previous baseline analysis of bladder health in the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey to incorporate several additional measures of bladder-related well-being collected at the 5-year follow-up interview, including one developed specifically for women. Methods At follow-up, participants reported their frequency of 15 lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), degree of life impact from and thought related to urinary symptoms or pelvic/bladder pain/discomfort, and perception of their bladder condition. Prevalence ratios were calculated by generalized linear models with robust variance estimation, adjusting for LUTS risk factors and individual LUTS. The BACH Survey was approved by the New England Research Institutes Institutional Review Board and all participants provided written informed consent. Results Generally similar findings were observed in the 5-year cross-sectional analysis as at baseline, irrespective of how we categorized LUTS or measured bladder-related well-being. Approximately one in five women (16.2%-18.0% of 2527 eligible women) reported no LUTS and no diminished bladder-related well-being, the majority (55.8%-65.7%) reported some LUTS and/or diminished well-being, and a further one in five (16.9%-26.6%) reported the maximum frequency, number, or degree of LUTS and/or diminished well-being. Measures of storage function (urinating again after less then 2 hours, perceived frequency, nocturia, incontinence, and urgency) and pain were independently associated with bladder-related well-being. Conclusions Our similar distribution of bladder health and consistent associations between LUTS and bladder-related well-being across multiple measures of well-being, including a female-specific measure, lend confidence to the concept of a bladder health spectrum and reinforce the bothersome nature of storage dysfunction and pain.Purpose A normative study using the Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment-2 (MAPA-2; Schow et al., 2018) was recently completed. With access to these data, the authors extend that work and support a definite construct for auditory processing disorder (APD). The goal here is to examine MAPA-2 reliability and validity (construct, content, and concurrent). Evidence for the APD construct is further buttressed by measures of sensitivity and specificity. Results of MAPA-2 testing on children diagnosed with learning disability (LD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and specific language impairment (SLI) are included. Method Normative data (previously published as the MAPA-2) allowing derivation of these findings included a representative sample of 748 children (53% girls) ages 7-14 years tested by 54 speech-language pathologists and audiologists in 27 U.S. states. The authors examined diagnostic accuracy based on the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (2005) criteria (index test) for confpresent positive findings will be found in future research.Application of fungicides has been the main management practice for Peronospora belbahrii, which is the most important pathogen of sweet basil in the United States. Six replicated experiments were conducted between 2010 and 2016 with field-grown basil of a susceptible cultivar exposed to naturally occurring wind-dispersed sporangiospores of P. belbahrii to evaluate conventional fungicides registered for basil downy mildew in the United States and in development for this use. This project revealed the importance for successful management of using a preventive fungicide application schedule, maintaining a 7-day application interval, and using application equipment designed to provide thorough spray coverage to plants (drop nozzles). Fungicide efficacy was assessed based on incidence of symptomatic leaves rather than disease severity, which is stringent but realistic because there is zero tolerance for disease on fresh-market herbs. Most fungicides were tested as the formulated product marketed in the United States.
