HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS) contributes to the increased cardiovascular risk connoting people living with HIV (PLHIV). HALS recognition, based on clinical ground, may be inaccurate urging an objective instrumental diagnosis. The aim of this study is to search for the DXA-derived fat mass ratio (FMR) threshold, among those suggested for the diagnosis of HALS, able to identify PLHIV at high cardiovascular risk.
In a cross-sectional analysis of 101 PLHIV (age 53±11 years, men 55%) and 101 age- and sex-matched uninfected controls, DXA-derived FMR and anthropometric as well as cardio-metabolic parameters were assessed. PLHIV showed a higher FMR (1.15±0.42 vs 0.95±0.18, p<0.01) together with a greater cardio-metabolic derangement than controls, in spite of lower BMI (24.3±4.3 vs 26.9±4.0kg/m
, p<0.01) and fat mass index (FMI, 6.6±3.0 vs 9.2±3.1kg/m
, p<0.01). Particularly, PLHIV with HALS (n=28), defined as those with a FMR above 1.260 and 1.329 for men and women, respectively, had a greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (18% vs 1%), insulin resistance (68% vs 27%), hypertriglyceridemia (50% vs 29%), hypertension (61% vs 30%) and metabolic syndrome (32% vs 10%) than those without HALS (p<0.05 for all comparisons) and controls. At multivariate analyses, FMR in PLHIV was significantly associated (p<0.05) with fasting glucose (β [95%CI]=0.5, [0.1-0.9]), insulin (44.6, [14.9-74.2]), HOMA-IR (1.6, [0.5-2.7]), triglycerides (1.0, [ 0.2-1.8]) and HDL-cholesterol (-2.1, [-3.9/-0.4]) levels.

Serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) may play a role in the development of adverse cardiovascular outcomes including heart failure (HF). Serum Cu/Zn-ratio has been shown to be a risk indicator for cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with HF has not been previously investigated. We aimed to assess the association between Cu/Zn-ratio and incident HF risk using a prospective cohort study.
Study participants were recruited in eastern Finland with baseline examinations carried out between March 1998 and December 2001. Serum levels of Cu and Zn were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry in 1866 men aged 42-61 years without a history of HF at baseline. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for incident HF. During 26.5 years median follow-up, 365 HF cases occurred. Restricted cubic splines suggested linear relationships of serum Cu/Zn-ratio, Cu and Zn with HF risk. A unit increase in Cu/Zn-ratio was associated with an increased HF risk in analysis adjusted for several potential confounders including nutritional factors such as total energy intake, intake of fruits, berries and vegetables, and red meat (HR 1.63; 95% CI 1.06-2.51). The corresponding multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) for serum Cu and Zn were 2.42 (1.32-4.44) and 1.34 (0.50-3.63), respectively. Addition of Cu/Zn-ratio to a HF risk prediction model was associated with improved risk prediction.

Growth arrest-specific 6 protein (Gas6) has been established to play important roles in various biological processes, but little is currently known on the role of Gas6 signaling in humans. This research explored the association between Gas6 expression and carotid atherosclerosis (AS) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
As many as 126 T2DM patients were recruited in this study and classified into two groups based on their carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Meanwhile, 50 healthy individuals were recruited for the normal control group (NC). The subgroups were compared in terms of clinical data and Gas6 expression levels. Gas6 levels were decreased in T2DM patients with or without AS compared to NC subjects (9.64±1.41ng/ml, 11.38±2.08ng/ml, and 13.64±2.61ng/ml, respectively) (p<0.001). The interaction between Gas6 and AS in T2DM was analyzed by logistic regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Decreased Gas6 expression was an independent risk factor relevant to AS in T2DM (p=0.027). The area under the ROC curve to estimate the diagnostic value of low Gas6 expression for AS in T2DM was 0.750. The correlation between Gas6 and other parameters was evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression model. Body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) were independently correlated with Gas6.

Rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among American Indians (AI) have been increasing. Although we have observed an association between atherosclerosis and CVD in older adults, the potential association among young AI is unclear. Therefore, we aim to describe the prevalence of atherosclerosis among young AI and determine its association with CVD and all-cause mortality.
We evaluated AI participants from the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS), who were <40 years old and CVD free at the baseline examination, 2001-2003 (n=1376). We used carotid ultrasound to detect baseline atherosclerotic plaque. We identified CVD events and all-cause mortality through 2019, with a median follow-up of 17.8 years. We used shared frailty Cox Proportional Hazards models to assess the association between atherosclerosis and time to CVD event or all-cause mortality, while controlling for covariates. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Taurine.html Among 1376 participants, 71 (5.2%) had atherosclerosis at baseline. During follow-up, 120 (8.7%) had CVD events and 104 (7.6%) died from any cause. CVD incidence was higher in participants who had baseline atherosclerosis (13.51/1000 person-years) than in those who did not (4.95/1000 person-years, p=0.0003). CVD risk and all-cause mortality were higher in participants with atherosclerosis, while controlling for covariates (CVD HR=1.85, 95%CI=1.02-3.37, p=0.0420; all-cause mortality HR=2.04, 95%CI=1.07-3.89, p=0.0291).
Among young AI, atherosclerosis was independently associated with incident CVD and all-cause mortality later in life. Thus, atherosclerosis begins early in life and interventions in adolescents and young adults to slow the progression of disease could prevent or delay CVD events later in life.

Ten surgeons and eight radiologists were shown three-dimensional images of 25 different patient cases, generated using both the volume rendering (VR) technique and the cinematic rendering (CR) technique. They were asked to mark the site of the fracture on the three-dimensional images and record the time this activity took. The effectiveness of the reconstructions to communicate with patients was assessed through the opinions of the surgeons and radiologists, as well as 25 patients. Subjective evaluations of the clinical value of the images were performed by the 18 surgeons and radiologists using a 10-item questionnaire. The percentages of correctly identified fractures of the nasal bone (P = 0.034), fracture dislocation (P less then 0.001), and free bone fragments (P less then 0.001) were significantly higher for CR images when compared to VR images, and identification took an average of 20.81 seconds for CR and 27.48 seconds for VR (P less then 0.001). CR images were found to be more beneficial for communication with patients and scored higher for the display of fracture dislocation and free bone fragments than VR images (P less then 0.05). CR images were found to have high clinical value in the visualization of maxillofacial fractures.Condylar hyperplasia is one of the causes of facial asymmetry and malocclusion, characterized by enlargement of the lower jaw due to excessive condyle growth activity. The aim of this study was to use micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to evaluate the bone architecture of the condylar head and determine whether there are differences between patients with various forms of unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) hemimandibular hyperplasia, elongation, and mixed form. The cohort consisted of 28 patients with a mean age of 21.9 years. All patients underwent surgical treatment (condylar shaving) for active pathological growth activity. The portion of the condylar head removed was imaged by micro-CT and subsequently evaluated. Micro-CT imaging and semiquantitative and quantitative evaluation of the bone structure (percentage bone volume, surface density, trabecular thickness, trabecular separation, degree of anisotropy, and porosity of the subchondral bone) did not reveal significant differences between the individual types of condylar hyperplasia (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in bone structure between the anterior and posterior portions of the condylar head. No statistically significant differences between individual groups of UCH were found in the micro-CT evaluation of the condylar head bone architecture.
This study identifies mental health, tobacco prevention, alcohol/beer, food/beverage, pharmaceutical, and other health-related advertisements across Spanish- and English-language TV networks owned by the same parent media company in the U.S. as commercial determinants of health disparities for Latino populations and/or viewers of Spanish-language TV.
A 3-week composite sample of Telemundo and National Broadcasting Company prime-time TV owned by the same parent media company was randomly drawn from March 31, 2021 to June 12, 2021 in Houston, Texas. A total of 1,593 health-related advertisements were yielded for systematic content analysis. Analyses included intercoder reliability, descriptive and bivariate analysis, and rate ratio and rate difference calculations.
Telemundo had significantly more health-adverse and fewer health-beneficial advertisements than National Broadcasting Company. Telemundo broadcasted about 11 more alcohol (95% CI=9.1, 12.5) and 5 more unhealthy/noncore food/beverages (95% CI=2.0, 7.2) advertisements per hour of TV advertisement programming than the National Broadcasting Company. Telemundo also broadcasted about 1 fewer mental health/tobacco prevention (95% CI= -0.9, -0.2), 3 fewer healthy/core food/beverages (95% CI= -1.5, -4.3), and 4 fewer pharmaceutical (95% CI= -2.4, -5.7) advertisements per hour of advertisement programming than the National Broadcasting Company.
Overall greater health-adverse and fewer health-beneficial advertisements are broadcasted on Spanish-language than on English-language TV. Unchecked corporate marketing strategies may serve as a commercial determinant of health disparities for Latino populations by Spanish-language TV.
