The bony otic capsule is comprised of highly mineralized and dense compact bone. It is rarely remodelled and degenerative changes, therefore, accumulate around the inner ear. It is also a predilection site for the pathological remodelling seen in otosclerosis. Morphometric studies have documented increased numbers of dead osteocytes and microcracks in the human otic capsule. Microcracks may disrupt the lacuno-canalicular network and cause osteocyte apoptosis ultimately breaking up the perilabyrinthine bone signalling pathways and dynamics. This may be important to understand the pathogenesis of remodelling diseases like otosclerosis.
This study describes the spatial and regional distribution of microcrack surface density in relation to the inner ear and compares it to that previously recorded for otosclerosis.
Forty-two temporal bones and five ribs were used. All samples were undecalcified, bulk stained in basic fuchsin and plastic embedded. Unbiased stereology was used to estimate the true surface density of microcracks (mm

The Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) is a structured rating scale designed to assess depressive and mixed symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD). Previous studies evaluating the scale have been performed on small samples or on patients in a depressive phase, but not on patients in a mixed or manic phase. This study evaluated the Persian version of the BDRS regarding its factor structure, reliability, and validity in a large sample of Iranian women with BD in a depressive or mixed/manic phase.
Three-hundred and one female BD inpatients completed the BDRS, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS).
The BDRS demonstrated a three-factor structure with good reliability. The BDRS and its psychological and somatic symptom clusters had stronger correlations with other measures of depressive symptoms than a measure of mania. The BDRS mixed symptom cluster also had a strongrovided evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity of the BDRS.
The Oxford classification of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) was revised in 2016 which lacked sufficient evidence for prognostic value of subclassification of focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (S lesion), and the proper proportion of S lesion for subclassification remains undetermined.
This study aimed to explore the predictive value of the new subclassification of S score on renal outcomes of IgAN patients.
348 patients with IgAN-associated S lesion were enrolled. According to the optimal cut-off of 25% established by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, we divided S1 patients into two groups S1a group (S lesion < 25%) and S1b group (S lesion ≥ 25%). IgAN patients with mild lesion (M0E0S0T0C0) were set as the control group. The clinical features at renal biopsy, pathological findings, and follow-up parameters (follow-up time ranged from 1 to 5 years) were collected. We used univariate and multivariate analyses to assess whether the subclassification of S score could refine risk prediction and cvel of S lesion.
This study might recommend new subclassification of S scores (S0 (no S lesion), S1 (S lesion less then 25% of glomeruli), and S2 (S lesion ≥ 25% of glomeruli)) for the Oxford classification. This model may also help to evaluate pros and cons of immunosuppressive therapy in IgAN patients with different level of S lesion.KEY MESSAGESS lesion ≥ 25% is an independent risk factor for poor renal outcome in IgAN patients.This new subclassification of S scores may help to evaluate pros and cons of immunotherapy in IgAN patients with different level of S lesion.Transmission of droplets has been recognized as an important form of infection for the respiratory diseases. This study investigated the distribution of human respiratory droplets and assessed the effects of air change rate and generated velocity on droplet transmission using an active agent in an enclosed chamber (46 m3). Results revealed that the higher the air change rate was, the fewer viable droplets were detected in the range of less then 3.3 μm with ventilation; an increased air change rate can increase the attenuation of droplet aerosol. Without ventilation, the viable droplet size was observed to mainly distribute greater than 3.3 μm, which occupied up 87.5% of the total number. When the generated velocity was increased to 20 m/s, 29.38% of the viable droplets were detected at the position of 2.0 m. The findings are excepted to be useful for developing the technology of reducing droplet propagation and providing data verification for simulation research.
