Group B streptococcal early-onset disease (EOGBSD) is a significant cause of morbidity and fatality in newborns. Current policy in Israel is risk-based management. Our aim was to re-evaluate the current screening policy for Group B Streptococcus (GBS), considering colonization and prevalence rates and costs estimates. This was a retrospective cohort study including term pregnancies between 2015 and 2016 insured by Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS). A costs estimation model was performed comparing three approaches universal culture-based screening, current policy in Israel and the current clinical scenario. Out of 54,759 pregnancies, 46.3% women undergo GBS culture-based screening. Overall GBS colonization rates in screened women were 21%. Six EOGBSD cases were identified, all offspring of mothers who were not screened. EOGBSD prevalence rate was 11 per 100,000. Universal culture-based screening was found to be 50% less costly than the current risk-based policy, and would have prevented 20.29 per 100,000 cases. Universal GBS culture-based screening was found to be more cost-effective, compared to the current policy and screening behaviors. Due to the clinical and economic benefits, we recommend that a change in policy should be considered.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) patients undergoing revascularization procedures often experience ongoing, diminished functional capacity, high rates of depression and markedly low quality of life (QoL). In CAD patients, studies have demonstrated that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is superior to traditional moderate-to-vigorous intensity continuous training (MICT) for improving functional capacity, whereas no differences between Nordic walking (NW) and MICT have been observed. Mental health is equally as important as physical health, yet few studies have examined the impact of HIIT and NW on depression and QoL. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to compare the effects of 12 weeks of HIIT, NW and MICT on functional capacity in CAD patients. The effects on depression severity, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and QoL were also examined.
CAD patients who underwent coronary revascularization procedures were randomly assigned to (1) HIIT (4 × 4-min of high-intensity work 6 and HeartQoL values were observed (main effects of time p < 0.05). HIIT, NW and MICT participants attended 17.7 ± 7.5, 18.3 ± 8.0 and 16.1 ± 7.3 of the 24 exercise sessions, respectively (p = 0.387).
All exercise programmes (HIIT, NW, MICT) were well attended, safe and beneficial in improving physical and mental health for CAD patients. NW was, however, statistically and clinically superior in increasing functional capacity, a predictor of future cardiovascular events.

In this study, we determined the lethal and sub-lethal effects of B. laterosporus strain UNISS 18, an entomopathogenic bacterium known for its effectiveness against synanthropic Diptera, on the larvae of the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, a vector of several pathogens to humans. Moreover, we compared the larvicidal activity with the lethal action on the invasive snail Physella acuta and on two non-target water-dwelling species the mayfly Cloeon dipterum, and the harlequin fly Chironomus riparius. B. laterosporus exhibited significant lethal effects on all the tested species with a concentration-dependent activity. However, the susceptibility varied among species, with a higher susceptibility of Ae. albopictus (LC50 = 0.16 × 107 spores mL-1) than the other species (LC50 = 0.31, 0.33, and 0.30 × 107 spores mL-1 for C. dipterum, C. riparius, and P. acuta, respectively). While 1st instar mosquito larvae were very susceptible to the bacterial infection, no effects on preimaginal development stages and adult emergence were observed at sub-lethal spores' concentrations. Even if the efficacy of B. laterosporus against Ae. albopictus and the invasive freshwater snail P. acuta is promising for their control, the susceptibility of non-target beneficial aquatic insects, highlights the need of accurate evaluations before applying B. laterosporus for pest management in water environments.Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7), one of the 11 phosphodiesterase (PDE) families, specifically hydrolyzes cyclic 3', 5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Here, we summarized the classification and distribution of PDE7 in the brain and its functional roles in the mediation of CNS diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and schizophrenia. It is expected that the findings collected here will not only lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms by which PDE7 mediates CNS function and diseases, but also aid in the development of novel drugs targeting PDE7 for treatment of CNS diseases.Adenosine, an endogenous purine nucleoside, is a well-known actor of the immune system and the inflammatory response both in physiologic and pathologic conditions.
