Subharmonic aided pressure estimation (SHAPE) is based on the inverse relationship between the subharmonic amplitude of ultrasound contrast microbubbles and ambient pressure. The aim of this study was to verify if SHAPE can accurately monitor disease progression in patients identified with portal hypertension.
A modified Logiq 9 scanner with a 4C curvi-linear probe (GE, Waukesha, WI) was used to acquire SHAPE data (transmitting and receiving at 2.5 and 1.25 MHz, respectively) using Sonazoid (GE Healthcare, Oslo, Norway; FDA IND 124,465). Twenty-one (median age 59 years; 12 Males) of the 178 patients enrolled in this institutional review board approved study (14F.113) were identified as having clinically significant portal hypertension based on their hepatic venous pressure gradient results ≥ 10 mmHg. Repeat SHAPE examinations were done every 6.2 months. Liver function tests and clinical indicators were used to establish treatment response.
Of the 21 portal hypertensive subjects, 11 had successful follow up scans with an average follow up time of 6.2 months. There was a significantly larger SHAPE signal reduction in the group who were classified as treatment responders (n = 10; -4.01±3.61 dB) compared to the single nonresponder (2.33 dB; p < 0.001). Results for responders matched the corresponding clinical outcomes of improved model for end stage liver disease (MELD) scores, improvement in underlying cause of portal hypertension, improved liver function tests and reduced ascites.
SHAPE can potentially monitor disease progression in portal hypertensive patients and hence, may help clinicians in patient management. A larger study would further validate this claim.

To assess resident and fellowship program director (PD) perceptions of the abdominal radiology fellowship application process following the first cycle in which an embargo on interviews until December 1, 2019 was set according to the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) timeline for the 2021-2022 abdominal imaging fellowship year.
Eligible study participants included fellowship PDs of all abdominal imaging programs in the United States and residents that attended the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR) 2020 Annual Meeting. A questionnaire was developed by content and survey experts, pilot tested, and administered from May to June 2020.
A total of 39% (36/92) of all PDs and 30% (46/152) of all individuals identified as residents with valid email addresses that attended the SAR 2020 Annual Meeting responded to the survey with an overall response rate of 34%. Only 42% of PDs and 33% of residents supported moving to a match, while 62% of PDs and 70% of residents thought that a match ed to a formal match. Specific suggestions for improvement were elicited from stakeholders and will be incorporated for the next cycle.

Hand hygiene is crucial for infection control in long-term care facilities for elderly (LTCFEs), because it can be easily implemented in the low-resource settings of LTCFEs. This study investigated the actual status of hand hygiene adherence in LTCFEs, identified the factors inhibiting its appropriate implementation, and evaluated the effectiveness of a hand hygiene promotion program.
In this before-and-after study, participants were staff members (n=142) at two LTCFEs in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. We modified the World Health Organization's "five moments for hand hygiene" and assessed participants' hand hygiene adherence rates in four situations (1) Before touching around a resident's mucous membrane area; (2) Before medical practice or clean/aseptic procedures; (3) After body fluid exposure/risk or after touching around a resident's mucous membrane area; and (4) After touching a resident's contaminated environments. The study was divided into four phases. In Phase 1, participants self-assessed their hand hygiene adherence using a questionnaire. In Phase 2, we objectively assessed participants' pre-intervention adherence rates. Stem Cells activator In Phase 3, an intervention comprising various hand hygiene promotion measures, such as education and hands-on training on hand hygiene practices and timings, was implemented. In Phase 4, participants' post-intervention adherence rates were objectively measured.
Although most participants reported high hand hygiene adherence rate in the self-assessment (93.1%), the pre-intervention evaluation revealed otherwise (16.8%). Participants' post-intervention adherence rates increased for all four situations (77.3%).
The intervention program helped increase participants' hand hygiene adherence rates, indicating its effectiveness. Similar interventions in other LTCFEs may also improve adherence rates.

Mitochondria are considered a portal to receive, process and integrate external energy and information to maintain cellular homeostasis. We examined the effect of Chinese texts with positive and negative meaning on the growth and mitochondrial functions using a mouse kidney collecting duct cell line called M1 cells.
To avoid skewing the results due to differential handling of the cells or analyzing the results, we conducted experiments by keeping the texts and blanks covered in brown opaque envelopes, exposed the cells to randomly selected envelopes and examined the differences over time. All operators involved in the experiments did not know the contents of the envelopes until the end of the experiments, and all data are expressed relative to the controls.
Cell growth rate was not affected for the group treated with positive information but was significantly reduced by 18% when treated with negative information. At the biochemical level, positive texts significantly increased whole cell adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and glutathione (GSH) by 22% and 21% respectively.
