The aim of this study was to identify and examine the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil collected from the surroundings of historical pesticide storage facilities on former agricultural aerodromes, warehouses, and pesticide distribution sites located in the most important agricultural regions in Azerbaijan. The conducted research included determination of three groups of POPs (occurring together), in the natural soil environment influenced for many years by abiotic and biotic factors that could have caused their transformations or decomposition. In this study, soil samples were collected in 21 georeferenced points located in the administrative area of Bilasuvar, Saatly, Sabirabad, Salyan and Jalilabad districts of Azerbaijan. Soil chemical analysis involved determination of organochlorine compounds (OCP) hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) (three isomers α-HCH, β-HCH and γ-HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs)ions of PCBs and PAHs than DDT. It is supported by the fact that PCBs and PAHs were not directly used by agriculture sector and their content results from secondary sources, such as combustion and various industrial processes. Moreover, the high concentrations of PAHs in studied soils were associated with their location in direct neighborhood of the airport, as well as with accumulation of contaminants from dispersed sources and long range transport. The high concentrations of pesticides confirm that deposition of parent OCPs have occurred from obsolete pesticide landfills.Mydriasis is required prior to many eye examinations and ophthalmic surgeries. Nowadays, phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHE) and tropicamide (TPC) are extensively used to induce mydriasis. Several pharmaceutic dosage forms of these two active ingredients have been described. However, no optimal therapeutic strategy has reached the market. The present work focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a mucoadhesive ion-activated in situ gelling delivery system based on gellan gum and hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) for the delivery of phenylephrine and tropicamide. First, in vitro drug release was studied to assess appropriate sustained drug delivery on the ocular surface region. Drug release mechanisms were explored and explained using mathematical modeling. Then, in situ gelling delivery systems were visualized using scanning electron microscopy illustrating the drug release phenomena involved. Afterward, cytotoxicity of the developed formulations was studied and compared with those of commercially available eye drops. Human epithelial corneal cells were used. Finally, mydriasis intensity and kinetic was investigated in vivo. Mydriasis pharmacodynamics was studied by non-invasive optical imaging on vigilant rabbits, allowing eye blinking and nasolacrimal drainage to occur physiologically. In situ gelling delivery systems mydriasis profiles exhibited a significant increase of intensity and duration compared with those of conventional eye drops. Efficient mydriasis was achieved following the administration of a single drop of in situ gel reducing the required amount of administered active ingredients by four- to eight-fold compared with classic eye drop regimen.Plant adaptations to changing environments rely on integrating external stimuli into internal responses. Brassinosteroids (BRs), a group of growth-promoting phytohormones, have been reported to act as signal molecules mediating these processes. BRs are perceived by cell surface receptor complex including receptor BRI1 and coreceptor BAK1, which subsequently triggers a signaling cascade that leads to inhibition of BIN2 and activation of BES1/BZR1 transcription factors. BES1/BZR1 can directly regulate the expression of thousands of downstream responsive genes. Recent studies in the model plant Arabidopsis demonstrated that BR biosynthesis and signal transduction, especially the regulatory components BIN2 and BES1/BZR1, are finely tuned by various environmental cues. Here, we summarize these research updates and give a comprehensive review of how BR biosynthesis and signaling are modulated by changing environments and how these changes regulate plant adaptive growth or stress tolerance.Aerial web-spinning spiders (including large orb-weavers), as a group, depend almost entirely on flying insects as a food source. The recent widespread loss of flying insects across large parts of western Europe, in terms of both diversity and biomass, can therefore be anticipated to have a drastic negative impact on the survival and abundance of this type of spider. To test the putative importance of such a hitherto neglected trophic cascade, a survey of population densities of the European garden spider Araneus diadematus-a large orb-weaving species-was conducted in the late summer of 2019 at twenty sites in the Swiss midland. learn more The data from this survey were compared with published population densities for this species from the previous century. Sleep disturbances are commonly reported by public safety personnel (PSP) and may contribute to the risk of developing mental disorders or exacerbate mental disorder symptoms. The current investigation was designed to provide estimates of sleep disturbances among PSP and explore the relationship between sleep quality and mental health status. PSP completed screening measures for sleep quality and diverse mental disorders through an online survey. Respondents (5813) were grouped into six categories communications officials, correctional workers, firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Many PSP in each category reported symptoms consistent with clinical insomnia (49-60%). Rates of sleep disturbances differed among PSP categories (p less then 0.001, ω = 0.08).
