The present randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study investigated the effect of a standardized fenugreek extract (FHE) on perimenopausal discomforts and its influence on hormonal balance and safety. Healthy women characterized with perimenopausal symptoms (n = 48), as assessed by MRS questionnaire, were randomized either to FHE (n = 24) or placebo (n = 24) and supplemented with 250 mg × 2/day for 42 days. Both inter and intra-group comparison revealed a significant improvement in somatic, psychological, and urogenital scores in FHE group, especially for hot flashes (25.9%), night sweats (26.5%), depression (31.8%), and insomnia (21.6%). Further hormone analysis revealed an enhancement in serum estradiol (18.9%), free testosterone (38.2%), and progesterone (19.9%) concentrations and a significant decrease in FSH (38.2%) and SHBG (21.1%) concentrations toward establishing a hormonal balance among FHE-group; without significant changes in other clinical safety parameters. Thus, FHE supplementation ofdeviations in clinical safety parameters. Thus, FHE could be a potential natural agent for the management of post and perimenopausal discomforts and has to be explored in future studies.
To verify the validity of the prediction of oral intake recovery for inpatients with aspiration pneumonia using the Hyodo-Komagane score.
Patients admitted for treatment of aspiration pneumonia sometimes have difficulty in resuming oral intake due to decreased swallowing function. Predicting whether the swallowing function will recover enough to achieve oral ingestion at discharge is an important factor in developing a treatment strategy. No studies have investigated the prediction of oral intake recovery using videoendoscopic examination.
Subjects were 65 patients who were admitted to an acute care hospital for the treatment of aspiration pneumonia. The patients were divided into two groups, the oral feeding group and the tube feeding group, according to their oral intake status at discharge or transfer. Logistic regression analysis was performed using the condition that tube feeding was not required as an objective variable and the items with significant differences between the two groups as explanatory variables. Additionally, the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify patients who could take food orally at discharge.
The odds ratios for the Hyodo-Komagane score and the pharyngeal clearance score were 1.485 and 3.379, respectively. When the cut-off values of the Hyodo-Komagane score and the pharyngeal clearance score were 6 and 1, the sensitivity was 0.88 and 0.91, and the specificity was 0.64 and 0.70, respectively.
The Hyodo-Komagane score and especially the pharyngeal clearance score are useful indices to predict oral intake recovery for inpatients with aspiration pneumonia.

To compare the fracture strength of extracted human roots with apical plugs of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) mixed with either Ca- and Mg-free phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or water, with and without calcium hydroxide (CH) canal pre-medication.
A total of 180 single-rooted human teeth were prepared to resemble immature roots and divided into groups (n=20). The negative control received canal irrigation only, and the positive control received intracanal treatment with CH for either two or twelve weeks. MTA mixed with water was used in Group 1 (i) without CH pre-medication - MTA(W); (ii) after 2weeks CH pre-medication - 2/52CH+MTA(W); and (iii) after 12-week CH pre-medication - 12/52 CH+MTA(W). MTA mixed with PBS was used in Group 2 (i) without CH pre-medication - MTA(PBS); (ii) after 2-week CH pre-medication - 2/52CH+MTA(PBS); and (iii) after 12-week CH pre-medication - 12/52 CH+MTA(PBS). A compressive force was applied to each root until the point of fracture. The results were analysed by the Kruskalen 2- or 12-week CH pre-treatment had been used. Use of CH dressing for up to 12weeks had no negative effect on fracture resistance of human roots.
Mineral trioxide aggregate mixed with Ca- and Mg-free phosphate-buffered saline had a significant strengthening effect on the fracture resistance of structurally weak roots, even when short-term calcium hydroxide pre-medication had been used. MTA mixed with water lost its strengthening effect on human roots when 2- or 12-week CH pre-treatment had been used. Use of CH dressing for up to 12 weeks had no negative effect on fracture resistance of human roots.Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) should effectively colonize along the plant root to enhance the plant and soil health. The present investigation aims to improve the PGPR-mediated plant health benefits through above-ground foliar management. A green fluorescent protein-tagged PGPR strain, Pseudomonas chlororaphis (ZSB15-M2) was inoculated in a nonautoclaved agricultural soil before rice culturing. Salicylic acid and cell extracts of Corynebacterium glutamicum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a supply of hormonal and inducer compounds were applied on the foliage of the 10-days-old rice plants and subsequently observed the colonizing ability of ZSB15-M2. The cell extracts of Corynebacteria and yeast showed a 100-fold increase in the ZSB15-M2 population in the rhizosphere of rice, whereas salicylic acid had a 10-fold increase in relation to mock control. The rice root exudates collected after the spraying of salicylic acid and microbial extracts showed significantly enhanced release of total carbon, total protein, total sugar, total amino nitrogen, total nitrogen, and phenol content. In vitro assays revealed that these root exudates collected after exogenous spray of these chemicals enhanced the chemotactic motility and biofilm formation of ZSB15-M2 compared to the control plant's root exudate. Gefitinib Metabolomic analysis of root exudates collected from these rice plants by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that the Corynebacteria and yeast cell extracts enhanced the divergence of metabolites of rice root exudate. Further, due to these cumulative effects in the rice rhizosphere, the total chlorophyll, total protein, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus of rice were significantly improved. These observations provide insights into the rhizosphere functioning of rice plants as modulated by above-ground treatments with improved colonization of inoculant strains as well as the plant growth.
