Microplastics have been detected on beaches and in the ocean from surface habitats to the deep-sea. Microplastics can be mistaken for food items by marine organisms, posing a potential risk for bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food chain. Our understanding of microplastic pollution effects on ecosystem and physiological processes of coral reefs is still limited. This study contributes to the understanding of effects of microplastic pollution on skeletal precipitation of hermatypic corals. In a five month aquarium-based experiment, specimens of four tropical species were temporarily exposed to high concentrations (ca. 0.5 g L-1) of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic particles ( less then 500 μm). The coral specimens all survived this treatment and show skeletal growth. The skeletal material produced during the experiment, however, incorporated plastic particles and plastic fibres in the aragonitic structure. Long-term consequences of such inclusions on skeletal properties such as stability are yet unknown.
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) cancer survivors (post-diagnosis to end-of-life) can face inadequate services along the cancer care continuum, including palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care. A growing literature base calls for more research on factors influencing palliative and EOL care access, outcomes, and distinct needs of SGM cancer survivors and caregivers. We analyzed peer-reviewed articles published 2015-present to identify trends.
Ten articles were SGM-focused or inclusive, cancer-focused, and included substantive discussion of palliative and/or EOL care. Four were research studies (three case studies and one qualitative interview study) and six were literature reviews. Recurrent topics included disparities in cancer risk, access, and care; essential cultural and clinical competencies; and need for professional and organizational standards and policies addressing interpersonal and institutional discrimination and inclusion. Provision of equitable, competent palliative and EOL care depends on continued advancements in research, translated into person-centered approaches to care. We discuss implications of findings for improving palliative and EOL care for SGM cancer survivors.

The highly social cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni exhibits dynamic and complex social hierarchies, yet explicit cognitive testing (outside of social contexts) and investigations of sex differences in cognition have yet to be fully explored. Here we assessed male and female A. burtoni in two cognitive tasks a novel object recognition task and a spatial task. We hypothesized that males outperform females in a spatial learning task and exhibit more neophilic/exploratory behavior across both tasks. In the present study we find that both sexes prefer the familiar object in a novel object recognition task, but the time at which they exhibit this preference differs between the sexes. Females more frequently learned the spatial task, exhibiting longer decision latencies and quicker error correction, suggesting a potential speed-accuracy tradeoff. Furthermore, the sexes differ in space use in both tasks and in a principal component analysis of the spatial task. A model selection analysis finds that preference, approach, and interaction duration in the novel object recognition task reach a threshold of importance averaged across all models. This work highlights the need to explicitly test for sex differences in cognition to better understand how individuals navigate dynamic social environments.
Cancer-associated cachexia is a common condition in patients with advanced cancer, and is associated with extreme and involuntary weight loss and irreversible muscle wasting. Despite its high morbidity and mortality, there is no known treatment to reverse its effects. Thus, there is increasing interest in whether diet and exercise can assist in the minimization of cancer-associated cachexia.
We reviewed the literature on the impact of dietary patterns, dietary components, and exercise on the progress and severity of cancer cachexia.
Although most studies have produced inconclusive or controversial findings, some promising studies using animal models and early human clinical trials suggest that dietary and physical therapy interventions may alleviate cancer-associated cachexia. find more Moreover, many studies suggest that controlling diet and exercise nevertheless improved the quality of life (QoL) for cancer patients with cachexia.
Ongoing studies will continue to examine whether different forms of multimodal therapy-combinations of cancer treatment, dietary regimens, anti-inflammatory therapy, and physical therapy-are effective methods to improve outcomes in advanced cancer patients with cachexia. Moreover, future studies should examine the effects of such interventions on long-term QoL and establish nutritional guidelines for the management of cancer-associated cachexia.
