These analyses create a picture of the multidimensional character of people-dog relations to offer new insights on why One Health-oriented rabies initiatives have not borne out their full promise. In effect, the article makes a case for a shift in public health orientations-away from intervening on these animals as vectors to be managed, and towards enabling multispecies habitats. This, we argue, requires the decolonisation of approaches to dog-mediated rabies, and expanded conceptions of 'healthy more-than-human publics'. In conclusion, the article chalks out broader implications for public health approaches to zoonoses in a world marked by mutual risk and vulnerability that cuts across human and nonhuman animals.Recently, the research on pain-related disability has increasingly paid attention to the psychological and social factors that may influence the biological condition. In the current study, we aimed to explore attachment styles, self-esteem, and quality of life in individuals with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Participants were 371 diagnosed women, with a mean age of 42.7 years (standard deviation = 10.6). The average number of years since diagnosis was 7.4 years (standard deviation = 2.4) years. To assess attachment, quality of life, and self-esteem, women responded, respectively, to the Relationship Questionnaire, the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory. Our results showed that secure attachment relationships and high self-esteem represent protective factors for quality of life of women with fibromyalgia, while the contrary emerged for insecure attachments and low self-esteem. The understanding of the psychological components that contribute to fibromyalgia may improve the effectiveness of interventions. We present a case of a 13-year-old girl with vertebral osteomyelitis. She had been experiencing lower back pain for 5 weeks, initially thought to be due to muscular causes. The blood culture showed no bacterial growth, and she was treated empirically only with antibiotics. She responded well to treatment and required no surgical intervention. Vertebral osteomyelitis should be in the differential diagnosis in an adolescent who complains of worsening lower back pain. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in avoiding complications. This is a case report of a 75-year-old immunocompromised male who developed encephalopathy while undergoing treatment for disseminated herpes zoster with peripheral nerve involvement. Apoptosis inhibitor While his initial presentation involved primarily profound lower extremity weakness, he developed progressive confusion to the point of obtundation only after initiation of standard therapy with intravenous acyclovir. The evaluation of his altered mental status was largely unremarkable. It was only after his acyclovir was discontinued that his symptoms resolved and he returned to his baseline mental status. His presentation was most consistent with acyclovir-induced neurotoxicity, which can present in patients with renal impairment and those who are immunocompromised.Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, a form of noninfectious thrombotic endocarditis, is mainly characterized by deposition of sterile platelet thrombi on heart valves. Usually, it is observed in advanced malignancy. Herein, we report a case of a previously healthy male with recent unprovoked deep vein thrombosis presented with acute ischemic stroke. The echocardiogram revealed aortic and mitral valve masses. Eventually, he was discovered to have advanced cholangiocarcinoma. The present case, apart from being the youngest reported case, is among the few reported cases which manifest the association between cholangiocarcinoma and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis.Angiosarcoma is a malignant endothelial cell tumor that involves a variety of anatomic sites with the skin being the most common. Cutaneous angiosarcoma is a diagnostic challenge as it can be confused with lesions such as rosacea, hemangiomas and hematomas. Since the tumor has a propensity for early metastasis and extensive intradermal spread, early diagnostic intervention via punch biopsy may prevent delays in diagnosis and improve tumor resectability and prognosis. We present a case of cutaneous angiosarcoma on the nose and cheeks of a 75-year-old male that resembled rosacea.Keloid scars can lead to significant patient morbidity and disfigurement, especially when located on the head and neck. Massive keloid scars are particularly difficult to manage due to ulceration, infection, pain, and high recurrence rates following excision. We report the successful treatment of a massive head and neck keloid scar with excision and grafting, post-excisional radiotherapy, and ablative fractional laser-assisted topical corticosteroid delivery.Pyoderma gangrenosum is often associated with a systemic disease. Cocaine-induced pyoderma gangrenosum, most probably caused by levamisole, has been described recently and typically presents as multiple, large cribriform ulcers. Peri-nuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody is the most common serological finding. A strong counseling for cocaine cessation, combined with wound care and immunosuppressive therapy, is the mainstay of treatment. We present two cases of cocaine-induced pyoderma gangrenosum and correlate their findings with the typical clinical, histological and serological presentation.
The World Health Organization collaborated in the first Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD), published in the 1993 World Development Report. This paper summarizes the substantial methodological improvements and expanding scope of GBD work carried out by WHO over the next 25 years.
This review is based on a review of WHO and UN interagency work relating to Global Burden of Disease over the last 20 years, supplemented by a literature review of published papers and commentaries on global burden of disease activities and the production of global health statistics.
WHO development of global burden of disease work in the Millenium Development Goal era resulted in regular publication of time series estimates of deaths by cause, age and sex at country level, consistent with UN population and life table estimates, and with cause-specific statistics produced across UN agencies and interagency collaborations. This positioned WHO as the lead agency to monitor many of the 43 health-related indicators for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
