A bacterium isolated on aerobic culture of liver and heart tissues was unidentifiable in the MALDI-TOF database. Subsequently, 16 S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the isolate shared 99.33% homology with Bisgaard taxon 40 from the Pasteurellaceae family. While the source of the bacterium and potential association with brevetoxin exposure are unclear, histopathology suggests that the bacterium was the proximate cause of clinical signs and mortality in all birds examined as well as the scale of the mortality event. This report highlights the need to conduct detailed investigations into wildlife mortality events and expands on the current, limited knowledge of the effects of novel Pasteurellaceae bacteria on avian health.The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is one of the most trafficked animal species globally, and is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. There is limited information on reproductive biology or pathology of this species. We now document the clinical and pathological features of pyelonephritis and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in one of these animals. Ultrasonographic examination revealed pathological changes in the kidneys and uterus. On histopathological examination, there was marked interstitial infiltration of macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes in kidney tissue, fibrinonecrotic ureteritis and mild endometrial hyperplasia. This first report of these urogenital lesions in this species will be valuable for the conduct of health and reproductive assessments of the Sunda pangolin, which inform conservation and ex-situ management of this species.Nodal lymphomas are less common in cats than in dogs and, consequently, no specific studies have been published. Cytology is the first step in the diagnosis of nodal lymphoma but is highly subjective. Morphological features have been introduced for the cytological classification of canine lymphomas but not for cats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate interobserver agreement on various cytological features of feline nodal lymphomas and to investigate the accuracy in predicting B or T immunophenotypes. Four veterinary cytologists examined 25 feline nodal and mediastinal lymphoma cytological samples by adapting the criteria used for the evaluation of canine lymphomas and setting histopathology and immunohistochemistry as the gold standard. High interobserver variability was found in the evaluation of most features except for the presence or absence of cytoplasmic vacuoles, which were more common in B-cell lymphomas. Cytology training centre was the major factor influencing the extent of agreement among evaluators. Diagnostic accuracy in predicting lymphoma immunophenotype varied from 35% to 75% and did not appear to be correlated with the experience of the evaluators. We conclude that cytological criteria, commonly used to describe canine lymphomas, are not adaptable to the counterpart feline neoplasms. Cytology-based immunophenotyping of feline lymphomas from different laboratories, and different cytologists within the same laboratory, differ substantially and should not be considered reliable. In these patients, it is vital to anticipate possible difficult intubation before surgery and make all necessary preparations.Cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome is a rare syndrome characterized by particular craniofacial features, cardiac abnormalities, and multiple organ diseases. Patients present with pulmonary stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, short neck, micrognathia, laryngomalacia, and tracheomalacia. These conditions may strongly influence patient perioperative outcomes. We describe a 15-year-old child with cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome presenting for a dentistry procedure. She had an uneventful perioperative and postoperative course except for difficult airway management.Interscalene brachial plexus block has been widely used in shoulder surgery. We report one case of long-term phrenic palsy following ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block and we will discuss the possible etiology and mechanism of this disability. For painful shoulder surgery, ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block remains topical. Alternative blocks, such as suprascapular and axillary blocks, may be reserved for patients with pre-existing respiratory pathology.Anesthetic agents and/or surgical positions, the total volume of hemangioma may increase under general anesthesia; thus, airway management of patients with a hemangioma may be very difficult. Our patient in this case report has a periorbital and oropharyngeal hemangioma that reaches down to the esophagus. We observed that the size and volume of the hemangioma increased significantly during elective nephrectomy surgery. After adequate therapy with steroids and beta-blockers, the size of the hemangioma decreased during the postoperative care unit monitoring period. We report this case to show the importance of airway management of hemangiomas with the potential for life-threatening complications.The first anesthetic machines appeared following their public demonstration by Morton in 1846. From the 1930s, the gas machines were fitted with a ventilator, and by the 1950s this had become a basic component of the anesthesia system.
